Re: 63 Starchief Restore ( God help me )

Thanks PG, hope my work is one fifth of my imagination:rolleyes: EZ, simple question, do you think any harm would come to the paint finish when you flip it back? I am quite sure extreme care and planning is in order. It would just hurt my feelings a heck of a lot if it happened to me, ( and you of course ). By the way, I just got through pressure washing the inside, man that clean aluminum with no pits puts a smile on my face. I was kinda worried about that. Silly me.
God bless.

I'm not too worried. We didn't drag it at all and the unloading/loading will occur on the grass so I figure worst case it gets a littke muddy. It was able to be lifted off and on the trailer

Re: 63 Starchief Restore ( God help me )

Ok EZ, it was as simple as you said. First I had to remove the top.

Then I had to get the boat off the trailer.

Then I had to flip it....easy.:)

Mind you, this was all done by a very tired person. Then the sanding began, I thought. It would seem someone has coated the whole bottom in Gluvit or something. Is that normal? I had to " upgraid " my grinder to make a little headway.
HPIM1729.jpg
ttp://[/IMG] Does this all have to be removed or is there a better way? The whole bottom is rough and I'd like a smooth surface.

fshnho I used 150 and 220 grit sandpaper on a random orbit sander to smooth out the bottom of my Jupiter . I will tell you it wasnt a quick job . I would bet I had 8 to 12 hours into sanding just the bottom of the boat.

Glad you got her flipped. That will certainly make all the prepping and painting work easier.

Re: 63 Starchief Restore ( God help me )

Just a quick update, well sorta. I have been busy in between the rain drops trying to remove the bottom paint. Wire brush on grinder works but is very slow, orbital works ok too but paper gets gummed up quickly. Not only is there at least three coats of paint, there is a random coating of gluvit...or something that does not like to come off. I tried a flap wheel on the grinder and that does the job great but I don't like removing the aluminum too. Kinda think I'll need that. I picked up some aircraft stripper at Wally World yesterday, I hope that works. I will find out today.Does everyone strip the bottom down to bare metal? I would love a smooth paint finish but what if I remove sealer that was put there for a reason? Annnnnndd do I strip out the sealer at all the seams and if so, what is the suggested material to replace it with? All help is appreciated, as always. Dale

I wouldn't worry about removing the sealer you have on the exterior. You ca replaced it with Gluvit in the inside. That's better anyway. Many of us didn't need to strip because our original paint was in good physical condition. However with your multiple layers I think stripping down to bare aluminum is a good idea. Make sure you use an appropriate zinc chromare primer before paint the bare metal. You only really need a dusting with that stuff.

Re: 63 Starchief Restore ( God help me )

Another member a good while back had great success with this stripper:

The stripper that i used is:

BIX TUFF-JOB REMOVER.

I bought it at home depot. It is a great product. It is made for Aircraft-Auto-Epoxy-Marine.... I will swear by this stuff till the day i die. Here is the bix website.

listed under removers.. Good luck...

Re: 63 Starchief Restore ( God help me )

Quick update. I am restricted to working in the weather, so my progress is slow and depends on Mother Nature. I am trying to make my hull as pretty as EZ's. I think I took on too much. I have tried grinding but it removes too much metal
Photo005.jpg
[/IMG] So I went to strippers.

[/IMG] Please note, the spray and paste work well, BUT, the spray is not recommended. I felt it on my hands and face, NOT GOOD:mad:. And I was outside. The paste works good and you don't have to worry about your face or other painted objects around you. So after about 23 hrs on 2 weekends I ended up with this.

[/IMG] Think I am down to the orbital sander now. Personal thanks to EZ for the inspiration;), and actually all of you guys. I will do this, just be patient with me.:D

Sorry I didn't see your posting I would've suggested SODA Blasting.. about $400 for a 21' hull up here in the NE.

The random orbit sander should clean up the rest. Man, what a pain. Good work.

Super duper boat! that looks like a great all weather machine! I REALLY hafta get a starcraft to restore!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I like to have good visibility too.....on my Sleekcraft I madea storage box for a cooler and put my seat on that...nice and high......now I can see much better over the bow.

There HAS to be a better way of stripping the paint off

You seem to be in the Soda Blasting capital - around 800-1000 here in WNY - my sister has a place near Franconia - I could bring it up there to get it done when I visit!

Re: 63 Starchief Restore ( God help me )

Back at it again. Hope all yall' had a great Christmas. Well, after our snowstorm:confused: my boat was covered in 13" of snow. It rained good enough Christmas that most of the snow is gone. I sanded for 5 hrs yesterday and 5 again today, ( 27 hrs total ) no more red paint!! I still have to clean around rivots and seams a little, but my attitude has improved:D. I haven't seen anyones thread that had so much paint to remove as mine, but now there's hope. Question for the experienced ones. I am thinking of gluvit on the bottom since I have her flipped, and I know it may be overkill. Other than the cost, will this cause me any additional work in the future? ( primer, paint, sanding, ect) Also, I have seen people use JB Weld to fill holes and kinda a spot putty, is this the way to go or is there something better? Is it sandable and is normal prep ok? Thanks guys, scary to say, but I'm getting excited about this.

Re: 63 Starchief Restore ( God help me )

Glad to hear the red paint is in your rearview mirror there...and the snow is melting for ya too:D

Most folks only gluvit the interior hull, I know of a couple that did the exterior and I don't think it causes any issues. It is sandable and can be painted over with normal prep to my knowledge.

I may be using gluvit on the exterior of my 12' tinny since I already sprayed bedliner inside below the water line(don't ask...pre iboats days:rolleyes:)

I'm getting excited about working on mine too, just need my budget to match my energy level:D Good luck, looking forward to seeing the rig this summer.

The gluvit on exterior is probably overkill but you can sand and paint it. The JB weld is tough stuff. Filled my larger pits/corrosion with it and used gluvit on lighter pitting and all seams/rivets, interior. Gluvit has a how to site, wish I looked at it before I used it. Basically two thin coats better than one thick. And it will take a day or 2 to cure (longer in cold) and the stink to go away. I would use it in a well ventilated area, no proof but I think I had a reaction to fumes in my airways, I was under the covered bow area for a while and attribute the reaction to that time.

Re: 63 Starchief Restore ( God help me )

Well, rumors of my demise are exaggerated. :D As I said, I got the bottom cleaned to bare metal. I went everywhere to find primer and ended up at NAPA like someone suggested and got a quart of self etching zc primer. I primed the bottom of the boat ( after cleaning it ) and went to work on stripping and sanding the sides. The stripper took off the top coat(s) of paint but didn't touch the base coat, guess that was original. Broke out the orbital sander and went through 13 pads of 80 grit sandpaper. I went to HD and got 2 quarts of Rustoleum bare metal primer, went home and got out the spray gun. Darned if my gun didn't get stopped up after 5 minutes of spraying. I did thin it with mineral spirits 5% as recommended. I figured I would roll & tip it, but the weather decided we needed more rain. So once again I am waiting on a nice day. BTW, my boss let me get off for the two nice days we got here, he said it was the best reason he had heard of to leave work. He is a boater too.:p I will post pics soon. Dale

Love those old hardtops, very cool. Glad to hear you survived the red paint ordeal. I look forward to pics of a painted hull.

My .02 cents, don't chop the top, if your still thinking of it.

Don
