62 johnson seahorse 10hp lower unit swap?

have or had a 1962 johnson sea-house 10hp model qd-24m trashed the lower unit this weekend. great running powerhead. want to know what other lower units would bolt up and what years might i be looking for (parts or entire unit) or any sites that might have parts. already tried e-who? any help would be greatly appericiated

Without going thru the parts books item by item, I would hazard a guess that the 10hp Johnsons and Evinrudes from 1958 thru 1963. Also the 9.5hp models 1964-up (not 9.9!!!) Of course the 9.5 drive shaft is shorter due to the squat design. Some will have a straight verticle leading edge, some have the nose cone, but that in itself shouldn't matter.

One thing to keep in mind - the 10hp units beginning in 1958 were based on the 5.5/7.5 units. Slightly beefier driveshaft, but the gears were essentially the same. As such, the margin for abuse on the 10hp units was much smaller. If you get another unit for your motor, consider rebuilding it with new seals, clutch dog, etc. Anything you can do to reduce the abuse factor will help greatly. Shift firmly and quickly at low speeds only. Check the lower unit oil several times a season (even if you do reseal it!). Keep the prop in perfect condition - any nicks or dings will cause vibration which can shorten gear and bearing life.

I also have stripped lower gears in both my '58s Johnson 10's.
I have a few mid and late 50's 5.5's and and they are not interchangable. The 10's are much beefer. I have heard that the lower units on the 7.5's will swap over to the 10hp though but I don't have any around. My local parts supplier in Canada said it would be around $400 to buy the three lower gears! ugh. So the engines sit.

The 5.5 and 7.5 use the same unit, part for part. The 10hp uses the same housing casting with some machining differences. A 7.5 unit cannot be made to fit a 10. The 10hp gears are not much beefier, but the spline arrangement is different, which prevents the 5.5/7.5 gears from being used in the 10... 10hp is based on, but not the same as the smaller motor's unit... The components inside are a little beefier, but still not terribly robust for the 10hp...

Typically, the gears go after the pinion bearing starts to get sloppy. If that bronze-phospher bearing is ovaled at all, the gears will start to get out of alignment .
