61 18hp Steering

I been lurking, reading and picking up a lot of information in the forums. I have an Evinrude 9.9 (1976) and I just got a 1961 18hp. Can anyone tell me how to adjust the tension in the steering. It is way too loose. I had no problem adjusting it on the 9.9 but can't seem to find the adjuster on the 18hp. Thanks.

HI bwkre. Welcome to iboats. Cool motor you got there. I have a '66 20 hp myself. I believe your steering tension can be adjust using parts #60 & #61 on page 10 of the link below.

Thanks kfa4303. I'll have a look tomorrow & see if that is it. I just finished resealing the lower end, replaced the coils, caps, contacts, and water pump. I'm hoping to run it in a drum tomorrow night and then try it in the water on Wednesday. It should be a step up on the 14' from the 9.9. But I'll keep the 9.9 for the lakes that have restrictions on motor size.
