A new to me 1990 60hp Johnson had a dribble comming out of the pee hole, so I replaced the water pump, impeller, and thermostat. Also, before reinstalling the lower unit I attacted a hose to the water tube with low pressure to flush out the waterways until i got a good flow out the pee hole. Today, with it all back together, I ran it on the muffs, but no water came out the pee hole. Plenty was coming out the two holes above the lower unit and also through the propeller.

I pulled the retainer off the end of the pee hose, but still no flow.

For backtracking the system for blockage, should I start by removing the thermostat, reinstall the thermo cover and try again? Or should it be peeing even before the thermostat opens? (Obivously I'm trying to avoid pulling the LU again)

The water indicator (tell tale, pee hole) is before the t stat, so it should start pissing after starting your outboard. Im assuming you remembered the key for the impeller right? Was the water intake are free of debris? Were you careful with the grommet on top of the impeller housing that it did not get lodged in the housing when inserting the water line? There could also still be some junk in the cooling circuit. Did it take a bit of flushing of the water line to get a flow out of the tell tale?

Thanks for clarifying that for me.

I was pretty careful about installing the water pump, but maybe I flipped the base plate or something. It did take a bit of flushing to get a good flow before. It looks like I get to drop the LU again and start over........

Well, I pulled the LU, hooked a hose to the water tube and slowly let it flow. Got tell-tale flow immediately, so I will re-do the water pump next.

I re-did the water pump...did not not see anything amiss. Put it back together and re-installed the lower unit. The only thing I could figure out was that the water tube came out of the grommet when the unit dropped down a litlte as I was installing it before. I carefully guided the tube into the grommet and made sure it stayed in place.

It's working fine now! Ya can't be too careful!
