I just recently bought this motor on a 60 naden boat... The last time I think that this motor has ran was in 1996. I don't know much about boat motors, so I thought I would ask some experts. What do I need to do first? I've been told I need to replace my water pump, rebuild the carb, change coils. I would like to know if this is the right place to start.

Before you do anything, make sure the engine is free to turn and has good compression. Spray some fogging oil into the cylinders through the spark plug holes and turn the engine over a few times to distribute it, then use a good, screw-in compression gauge and the starter motor to check the compression on both cylinders.

If it's above about 85 and about equal on both cylinders, then you can proceed with the steps you listed. If not, you might be wasting your money and time.

Those are great old engines, and I hope yours is in good shape.
