Trying to feel my way through the water pump replacement and ran into a snag. Power head off, shift linkage disconnected from shift lever, drive shaft seals off and put in order. Now what do I do? Should I be able to take the entire lower unit free from the leg? Is their something else to do to the drive shaft at the top?

Reading my post I realize how it's stream of consciousness, or worse. I can get the gearcase to slide down, but there is a "rollpin" attached to the drive shaft that must be removed in order to get the impeller out. I don't know what a rollpin is and I don't want damage anything. Sorry for the muddled question. Any help is greatly appreciated.

You do not have to remove the roll pin. Remove the screws from the water pump housing, then the whole shebang will come up, pulling the drive shaft out of the lower unit. Don't fear, it will go back in with no problem.

BTW, that roll pin drives the lower crankshaft seal. That seal is of utmost importance and will destroy the powerhead if not in good shape and assembled correctly. ALWAYS use a new 303355 gasket and 303347 o-ring.

Thanks, F_R for the heads up on the roll pin. And the advice on the lower crankshaft seal may save my engine. Get this, the 303347 part was not in the stack of seal components when I took it out! My guess is that the last impeller changer left it out by accident. Doesn't appear to have jammed anything up.
