'54 Evinrude 7.5 - needle packing difficulty?

The high speed adjustment rod is loose on my carb and won't hold its position. can I replace the packing without removing the carb? What packing material should I use? This is my first post here, so thank you
guys for helping a novice.

You can get the packing washers at either NAPA or your local dealer, fairly cheap.

Did you first simply tighten the high speed needle valve nut? That does not stiffen the needle up?

I did carefully torque the packing nut but there was no room for adjustment. I'll grab some washers from NAPA. Thanks HighTrim.

Hmmmm, where did your old packing go? Tightening the nut 1/8 - 1/4 turn should tighten the needle to where it doesn't move around.

Fors many years, I have used cotton thread as packing. Wrap it around the shank of the needle valve, grease it a bit to hold it in place, and install the needle...

Thanks for the great idea, Chinewalker. I'm going to try to start it tomorrow. New coils. New lube down below. Clean tank and new hose with tiny fuel filter. New plugs. I haven't heard this baby run for forty years!

It's kind of mysterious where the old packing has gone. It's just not there.
