Thanks Gr, old islander and JB. If you guys know of anywhere to get a 50hr 1952-54 motor (Johnson) please turn me on. I'm not stuck on Johnson but I've always had great running with them.

I have a great idea of how to pour in my foam. It will be a mold of sorts and I should (if everything goes as planed) be able to remove the foam in 3 sections if needed while allowing for plenty drainage. I have no bilge pump. I will post pics when I start. The weather is to cold so it might not be for a couple months. How do I keep you guys up to date in the future with my progress? Im very excited to get her on the water again where she belongs lol... Never really had a project like this.

I don't know Don, but thanks Don for the diagrams. I chase wiring in cars so I can read them fairly well lol...

Hi nstierna, I can relate to your story. I too had a Father that only loved what came in a bottle. You might want to do a little poking around in the outboard section of this sight. Many, many guys there that are into the vintage stuff. They might be able to help you find the motor your looking for. I know for sure they can hook you up with parts and the knowledge to get one running like new again. The guys on this sight are great. Everyone I have met here has been a stand up guy, and there is no problem with an old tin boat that cant be solved with their help. Dive in and get started.

If you want to remove the foam in the future just lay a garbage bag down, you can pour on it or in it.

I don't know of any low hour Johnsons, but where are you located? Just in case.

I've rattled the same type of foam idea around too. Two reasons - easy removal if needed and also to keep water away or at least minimize water/foam contact.

Finally - Just keep posting here to show progress or ask questions. You can even change the title of the thread and if you ask a Mod nice he can move the entire thread into the Starcraft section if you wanted.

And speaking of Mods - Don was, actually is one of the long time Mods, who passed away last summer. He has gems of knowledge and wit all through out the forums. Don S - RIP.

With regard to finding an old motor, I have had excellent results by watching craigslist for your locale. Usually the nice motors are relatively expensive, so they are usually listed for a while, giving you time to get over and look at them and size up the seller. Do your homework and don't run and buy something that is too far gone or not what you really want. I have even posted "wanted" ads for some vintage stuff and have had really good luck. Just have to be cautious but you'll find what you need there eventually without breaking the bank. The fun is in the hunt!
