50hp Evinrude, prop not turning

I have a 1989 50 hp Evinrude Tracker engine. We took boat out yesterday and it quit pulling. Didn't hit anything. I pulled prop off and splines look good on shaft. Where should I look next? I thought I would drain oil out of foot and see if anything was in oil, (metal etc.) Any help would be appreciated.

Maybe a spun prop hub. Remove the prop and look at the back side, you will see the splines that match up to the propshaft, and the hub of the prop itself. Inbetween the to is a pressed in rubber bushing, might not be able to see much of it. Scribe a line across the splined part to the metal prop hub, run the engine until it slips, remove the prop and see if the scribe marks are still aligned. If they are not lined up the hub is spun in the prop and will have to be rehubed, most deales can get this done for you.
It would probably be a good ides to check the lower unit oil for metal particles.

Thanks for info. When it quit turning it has never started back. I crank it now and it just sits there. If I put in gear it turns just a little and locks up.

Check the lower unit oil for metal. Have someone shift it into gear while you are rotating the prop by hand and see if it goes into gear, does it lock up or does it grind the gears in the lower unit?
It is hard to check for a spun hub by turning the prop by hand unless it is really trashed.

I haven't checked the oil yet but I did try to spin prop and then put in gear. When I tried that it just stopped turning, no grinding or noise at all, just stopped. When engine not running and I put it in gear it turns about 2 inches then stops., forward and reverse. It is free in neutral.

Is this a very expensive repair, judging by the picture and price of part, it looks kind of complicated.

It looks like you are going to have to tear down the lower unit to see exactly what is going on.
