5056 rivets vs 2117tv rivets for 5052 aluminum hull

Hello all! Very unknowledgeable but also meticulous...makes life hard!

I am looking to replace many solid hull rivets on the bottom side of a Starcraft 16 ft super sport. I have found conflicting information on the appropriate rivets to use.

5056 rivets seem to be readily available on Amazon (and is recommended many places to pair with 5052 aluminum...which is what these hulls are).

Yet here on the forums 2117t4 is what is recommended...even though it seems to be obnoxiously more difficult to order.

I want a high quality long lasting repair and I don't want to do it again...

Guidance?

Ayuh,..... Welcome Aboard,....... Back when I had my ole Starcraft Islander, I bought closed end pop-rivits, 'n used them,......
No idea what the aluminum code on 'em was, 'n never had any sorta issues with 'em,......

The 2117 is “structural” quality aluminum alloyed for making rivits.

5056 is soft, used in forming and punching.

I would stick with 2117

I stumbled across blind closed end rivets on sleezebay.
Didn't know such a thing existed... well I never had a use or looked for any...
I can get like 250 for about $30/$32? 5/8" grip. 3/16" dia. alum.
100 was like $17.
The/my rub rail is secured every 3"-4" with SS screws and they pass through both hull and cap very close prox. to rivets.

If using closed end blinds, make sure to use aluminum mandrel aluminum rivets on an aluminum boat.

Steel mandrels can rust and corrode where ever it settles on the aluminum

5000 series aluminum is marine.

There are a number of 5XXX series alloys that have no business being anywhere near a marine environment.

Aluminum alloys 5059, 5083, 5086, 5454, and 5456 are the primary “marine” alloys in use today

Use 5051, 5083 and 5086 all the time.

Have some projects using 7075 as well

Ended up finding a decent selection of the 2117t4 rivets on ebay instead of the 500 piece mega packs on amazon.

I found some papers that suggest that starcraft used 5056 rivets originally, but it was not clearly stated.

The only argument I keep seeing being made against 2117t4 is that they may be nitpicky overkill...the arguement being made against 5056 and other variety of rivets is more severe.

For peace of mind i went for the inarguable.
