50 mercury wont start ??

1985 mercury 50 4 cyl, 2 stroke ran fine 2 weeks ago . went today and wouldnt start. smells flooded ? plugs where wet hen pulled( NGK, funny looking with flush electrode) doesnt seem to be firing ?? cant see any spark ?? should i be able to see spark ?? can i cross the wires to see if it trys to backfire ???

You should see spark on a surface gap plug, first check the tether switch and make sure it is on, next disconnect the black/yellow kill wire at the switch box and check each time for spark if none get back and we can give you the test for the ign. system.

use a proper spark tester makes it much easier.

the bulb pumps up good and firm. checked the lanyard and kill switch,their correct. checked plug spark with ohm meter and test light....... nothing. even crossed # 1 and 2 wires and tryed . no backfire or nothing. engine is spinning plenty fast. theres a black and yellow wire close to the starter thats hooked to a little condenser looking thing then to ground. disconnected this ....... nothing ??
