Re: 50 hp force motor
I also had a 1990Capri 1550 with a 50HP Force. I wiegh 245lbs, and could get 28MPH max. Put my 90lb daughter in it, and we could maybe get it to plane at 20mph, after a 2 minute walk-up.
Sorry performance. But then, we didn't mind much, because the waterways we frequrented were supposed to have sea cows in them---thus, we only needed idle speed.

As for the overheat alarm, it was an overheat condition that should not be ignored. If the impeller has not been changed in the last 2 years, or it has more than 70hours operating time on it, it is overdue. Replace the thermostsat too, as they do sieze-shut if the motor is not operated often, or has not been flushed after use.
The impeller is a breeze to change on this engine, but there is a standard "learning curve", which makes it a real bugger the first time.
Best advice is to get the shop manual, and check all the things that need checking when they are due.If you do, chances are good you'll keep it running good for years to come.
And speeking of that, kudos on catching a problem before it became a melt-down.
