Just a guess on the speed, 35MPH. How do you know the cooling system is working fine? Have you tried putting your hand on top of the powerhead and holding it there for a few seconds when the alarm goes off? If you can't hold it there, it's getting hot.

Re: 50 hp force motor

The water volume may not be enough to provide ample cooling. Could be an old weak impeller, or a partial blockage of the water intake, or a blockage in the powerhead.

Top boat speed, 30-35mph. Top engine speed, 4700 to 5300 rpm, approx.

35 MPH for that boat with a Force 50 HP is kinda stretching it, more like a max of 30 MPH empty, "bout all you can do is put a bigger engine on the tranny.....Whats it rated for?

If you are going to own a boat and motor, and do any work on it at all, you are going to NEED a manual.

You may be able to find some exploded diagrams online, but you will still need the step by step instructions and the torque specs.

Re: 50 hp force motor

I have a 1990 Force 50 HP. Check the thermostat to see that it is opening fully. Could have crud preventing it from fully opening. Otr check the water intake to see if the holes are plugged. This motor only spits water, so it won't look like a lot coming out. Also, check the temp. of the water as it leaves the spitter. Just by hand is fine. If you can't hold it there, it's getting too hot.
To replace the impeller get the manual or solicit the help of a mechanically inclined boating friend. It's not hard to do, BUT, you had better make sure you get the shift linkage just right. Otherwise you'll get clunking in the lower unit.
Good luck.

I have a Force 50 too, 92 though. Apparently the Force 50 is more like a 35 because there were two ways to rate the motor: At the prop or above.

My 50 Force with my Bayliner 15ft goes about 28-29mph max with one person, planer boards and trimmed to best. Whereas we had a 14ft Grew with a 55 Mercury and it went about 35mph.

Steve

Re: 50 hp force motor

I go with FlyBoyMark and gfinale, don't expect too much speed. I have a force 50 1996 on a 15' Tempest bow rider, and when perfectly planed and by myself, can get 28-29 mph on GPS top speed. NEVER beat the 30mph mark. SUCKS. As for temp, there is a buzzer in console that is actuated by a ground from the temp sensor(mounted on the lower rear of engine). If you have a quicksilver control, I think it is a tan colored wire (from memory). Not much can go wrong with it to set it off besides a ground short or less likely, faulty sensor. More likely, it's legit and you have a cooling issue and engine is overheating, as stated above.

Re: 50 hp force motor

I also had a 1990Capri 1550 with a 50HP Force. I wiegh 245lbs, and could get 28MPH max. Put my 90lb daughter in it, and we could maybe get it to plane at 20mph, after a 2 minute walk-up.
Sorry performance. But then, we didn't mind much, because the waterways we frequrented were supposed to have sea cows in them---thus, we only needed idle speed.

As for the overheat alarm, it was an overheat condition that should not be ignored. If the impeller has not been changed in the last 2 years, or it has more than 70hours operating time on it, it is overdue. Replace the thermostsat too, as they do sieze-shut if the motor is not operated often, or has not been flushed after use.
The impeller is a breeze to change on this engine, but there is a standard "learning curve", which makes it a real bugger the first time.
Best advice is to get the shop manual, and check all the things that need checking when they are due.If you do, chances are good you'll keep it running good for years to come.
And speeking of that, kudos on catching a problem before it became a melt-down.
