$50 150hp Gambling project (pics)

So I got a 1986 150hp Evinrude dropped on my Trailer, I paid $50
Hmmm, 58 year old man with a 390lb motor on his trailer, and I have no idea if it even has a chance Geez……)
So I went to work. I put a nice boom out the front of my Garage, hung up my Coffing hoist and went to designing and building a stand that was worthy of holding the motor while I work on it and hopefully start it. Of course starting with the stand tied to the boom. We’ll I got her on the stand……) here’s my findings so far, I made the trim work, it shifts fine, but I haven’t checked fluid. Next I found the problem that made them abandon the boat. It had a dual cable steering system and the second cable apparatus was broken. The boat couldn’t steer…That’s as far as I got today, but I’ll post some pics of the project….

I probably won’t get to doing the almighty compression test until early this week coming up. But I’m optimistically crossing my fingers at this point…. I’m so hoping I have a $50 capable 150hp outboard… I’ll post how it turns out… if the basics are good, it’ll be a nice score…. Better than hanging out at a poker table, and certainly better than couching myself to death….)

Oh and by the way, welders are not allowed to look at my welds…..) they’re ugly, but plentiful….

Remove bypass covers and inspect pistons and rings.

Thanks for the vote of confidence, I’ve seen people abandon boats in Marina’s for less….. And replacing that bracket would be an expensive Job…

If it is the part added for the dual cable steering at the motor , how did you determine that would be expensive ??

i will say a guy dropped off a 1996 3 liter 200hp looper last fall for free. said i could have it. needed a couple coils and a timer. runs great.
