Re: 4x4 or not?

I just don't see the reason to spend any more cash to do the same thing.

You sound either very conservative or don't earn a good living or don't have a lot of wealth. Here's my take, I'm ultra conservative x1000. More conservative than probably anybody you've ever met. Except, my conservatism and the accompanying choices lead me to a path of a high paying career and a few bucks in the bank. After a while I got bored with crap cars and boats and stuff only to have a bunch of wealth and more coming in every week. After a while you also get sick of rusty, 15 year old cars and cheap everything. While the basis of your decisions is still conservative, you start to buy nicer stuff because you can...not new cars and boats but slightly used and depreciated stuff. Instead of driving 2012 Escalades and Mercedes, we drive GM and similar a few years old. That is what conservative becomes after a while when your paradigm shifts going from very poor to not over a period of time.

That is the most rediculous thing I have heard jkust. The Reason bucket of rivets doesn't see the reason to spend more cash to do the same thing is because he is poor? To me it sounds like he is more financially responsible. Take my father, He is an empty nester and has enough money to buy a huge house, he decided on a house just large enough for himself, my step mother and a couple of extra rooms for when his kids (Us) come and visit. Does this make him poor. I commend you on your hard work to get your high paying job but just because you have "A few bucks in the bank" Don't sit on your "over priced" high horse and judge us that bargin shop and find cheaper ways to accomplish the same goal.

Heck I don't own 4 x 4 anymore because they burn tires and it bugs me. To each his own. We all have our own little idiosyncrasies. Likes, dislikes etc. Not all of them are rational. So what?

No, you see I said 'or he is conservative and more likely a conservative outlier'. He may just be exactly that. I can't give a better comment than to call someone conservative. Back up, take a second and actually comprehend. Even the financially responsible get tired of ho hum stuff and realize you only have a limited time to enjoy life. Not having a large house when it doesn't suit your lifestyle is just being practical. Once the retirement is funded, the house is paid off, the kids college is paid and you have no debt, you want to start living and making the leap from adequate to something else. I'm in my 30's and not getting any younger and I don't think for one second having nicer things paid for with cash is in any way not financially responsible. It is just the opposite, had I not been conservative and financially responsible I would have never gotten to this point. After a while of hard work and having it pay off, I just don't know anybody that doesn't improve their lifestyle. I know a few farmers that have really old work trucks and subscribe to the bare minimum philosophy but they also run business but have at least one nice truck.

Re: 4x4 or not?

I love the way that threads get off message as they evolve. This was originally a thread about whether a 4 x 4 was necessary or not. And the simple answer is that it's not necessary but it can be a nice thing to have because of outside conditions (like a slippery ramp) acting upon the normal conditions. Is it necessary....no. Do I have it?....yes. (And I have towed a lot of boats and trucks that didn't have it back up launch ramps over the years).

Re: 4x4 or not?

If my truck was 4x4, I'd have another axle to service, another set of U joints to maintain, and no doubt it would get a few less mpg due to both weight and drag.
My 4x4 pickup (1999 Dodge Dakota) has cost me the price of one front haftshaft ($60 IIRC; installation was DIY) and a transfer case fluid change (maybe $5, also DIY) over what a 4x2 would have cost. Not a lot whne spread over the 4 1/2 years I've owned it. But I bet my fuel economy is lower than an equivalent 4x2 would have given me, so I agree with you there.

Wow, 6 pages, lol Just buy a 4x4 and you won't have to ask the question. Like I and many others always say, you don't need 4 wheel drive until you really need it.

That being said, my two wheel drive truck does just fine, but its a heavy beast.:D Weight and traction goes along way.

Now you know of at least one person that doesn't.......;):)
I'm happy to have broadened your horizons today.
Hopefully you are doing some charitable giving along with everything else.

Two things on this, yes of course we give a lot each year and also we give a large sum each year to a large, national charity intermediary in mid April.

Cool!
It is good to give back when we're blessed with more than we need.
