I'm new here, great info to lurk through. last night i posted on a 3 month old thread asking if the balancer needs to be replaced when upgrading to a low mount alternator kit (breezeworks). the thread is now locked and my reply erased. sorry if i pissed someone off. if anyone has the answer please post. my stator spit it's magnets out at full throttle. i'm assumeing that i will be replacing that with the balancer. curious if others doing this upgrade had to or just a choice. thanks

*3 months is the cutoff on the thread. cool. i was surprised that it was locked. please post it up. i'm interested in what others did with this upgrade*

No, it does not need to be replaced, just remove the rest of the magnets so it stays in balance.

Actually, you should have read the "Announcement" at the top of this forum, here it is if you can't find it http://forums.iboats.com/announcement.php?f=445

Just to keep your nomenclature correct: The magnets are in the rotor (technically the 470 does not have a "balancer") which is the rotating part of the alternator. The stator is the wire coil bolted to the front cover and does not turn. After you get the rotor off you can remove the stator, it is no longer needed. You can also remove all of the wires from the voltage regulator, also no longer needed.

yeah, saw it after. I was in the thread when I registered, after registering replied to the thread, opend the forum the next day and saw the anouncement. sorry.

as for terminology, yup. the thingy on the front spit at me.

good to know that I can just pull the guts and maintain the pulley. didn't want to spend more on it than i had to. we've had the boat for 2 years, it's been great and smooth runner until this year. it's sat under it's tarp until recently. no time to fix. the other night had a look. saw pieces and remembered being hit by debri when it died

thanks for the reply's
