i have a 79 cvx23 jet boat completely redone but i blew the motor last year it had a 460 stroker roller motor with a berkely kit in it with custom headers i am having money issues so i can not afford to rebuild the motor back up. but i have a crate 460 out of a 86 ford truck in my garage. i would like to install that truck motor in the boat and was wondering if it was possible and if it would be enough motor to run the boat the way it should.

A stock '86 460 has around 200hp, but a huge amount of torque at low RPM. Not really a good boat motor, makes a great truck motor. I would use the heads and intake from your blown up stroker if they are decent castings. If not, locate a set of D0VE heads to bump the compression and a new timing set that is not set retarded like Ford sent from the factory and you will have a decent runner, probably a little over 300hp.

You could swap the cam, but use new lifters. They will wear differently in a new engine even if you keep the lifters to the same lobes and that can wipe out the cam... I never reuse cams but there is no rule against it.

how can u tell if you have a internally balanced motor or externally balanced motor?

and does that truck motor rotate the same direction as the berkeley motor

If you swap the cam and distributor to the original motors parts, your engine will turn the right way, but it is probably std rotation anyway.. 460's were external balance after 1978 but you will only need a new flywheel/ coupler if your original is internal balance. The internal balance will not have a weighted flywheel

Because of clearance issues, You may need to use the oil pan and pickup from your old motor.

Thanks helps a lot. When I pull heads off of stroker motor I'll put casting number on here so you can tell me if it is good head to run.

Post some pics of your boat. Love the Carlson cruisers.
