Hey everyone,
Back again with another question about my engine/outdrive combo. Always appreciate the feedback get from you all. I have a '89 460 King cobra and was experiencing some hard shifting issues.
Every time I'd go out the my outdrive would be stuck in neutral and I'd have to work the shift lever back and forth a while until it finally would break in and move freely. I took off the outdrive and couldn't even move the shift rod in the lower unit by hand. I read some where it should only take about 10-12 lbs of force to move that rod up and down by hand. Long story short, the problem was a hardened wiper seal on the shift rod cover. Ordered the parts and I'll replace, and I'm sure everything will be fine, but that's not why I'm here.
OMC upgraded their shifter detent in the early 90's. I figured I'd replace that because people were saying the newer detent is way better and less stress on the shift cable. Only problem is it looks like OMC only upgraded the detent for the smaller 5.7's. Per marineengine.com the 7.5l king cobra shifter detent still uses the original part number where as the 5.7 shows the oem detent part# along with the newer upgraded part #.
Do any of you have any info on whether the 7.5 king cobra has a newer detent? Might be a dumb question, but could I install the upgraded detent from the 5.7 on my 7.5?
Attached are some reference pics to what I'm talking about.
