The lower unit of my japanese made mariner has a drain/ fill hole, a vent hole and one in between those two. The top and bottom openings have washers on the screws that plug the holes, but the middle one does not. All it has is a real smooth washer like finish on the inside of the screw head. Is this normal? It doesn's seem to leak. Also what is the purpose of the middle hole? Also the washers on the top and bottom screws are some type of fiber like materal, not metal.

Depending on the model that may be the pin/screw that holds the shifting apparatus in place.

I suggest you find a manual.

Thanks, The motor does have a washout opening, but its about 5 or 6 inches above the gear oil vent, so I'm assuming the screw between the vent and the fill/drain is what was mentioned in the first post. Thanks again.
