Jason that sounds like a great plan, well thought out.

As for me I think I may have turned a 4yr degree into a 5 yr path, but I dont exactly plan on asking anyone "if they want fries"

Over here,

Uni-students get their tuition payed for by the government, then, when they get a job, they have to pay it all back through their tax , it called a HECS debt.

I got the same education through an apprenticeship in electronic engineering, got paid for it, don't have hecs debt, and never had to ask, 'do you want fries with that?'

i'll agree that a degree doesn't guarantee anything, but i also find those that didn't attend college are usually the ones that point out how useless it is. about every stat you look up states a college degree usually gets you a better job and more pay. yeah, i know you can pull up some pretty impressive people that didn't attend, but it's a small percentage. doctors, lawyers, corporate and govt leaders... most attended college and wouldn't be where they are without it.

i also takle exception to the liberal arts bashing, and that's coming from an engineering major at one of the most respected engineering schools in the country. in the military, it doesn't matter what you majored in, you're simply put in a position of leadership. on my first ship, i showed up and was made the deck division officer. a girl who was a history major was made the propulsion officer. it wasn't so much her degree, but rather the experience and maturity gained in college. we eventually switched roles (what they do with JOs), but i can't say i did any better than her simply because i was an engineering major.

:) I for one do not think that college is useless!!! Even tho I only have a high school education, college is benificial to many, but is useless to some!!! There are achievers and non achievers in society!!! I find that percentage wise I'm better off then most of my friends that did go to college!!! But I can't see putting a hundred thousand dollars into college if all you are going to get is a 40,000 dollar a year job, such as a social worker etc:!!!!

A mandatory book of reading for college should be, "The Millionaire Next Door"!!!!! ;)

MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!! MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!!!

"It is gross superstition to suppose that knowledge can be obtained only by going to schools and colleges. The world produced brilliant students before schools and colleges came into being. There is nothing so ennobling or lasting as self study. Schools and colleges make most of us mere receptacles for the superfluities of knowledge. Wheat is left out and mere husk is taken in. Mohandas Gandhi

I don't think I agree completely with the Mahatma, but his point is well taken. What one gets out of organized education experience is proportional to what one puts into it.

Because informal learning is usually planned and driven by the learner the probability of lasting effect is far greater than simply being a "receptacle" of someone else's idea of what is important and useful to the learner's goals.

I am a high school drop-out and I earn six figures, almost as low as you can go six, but I still make that bracket . . . With that said, we push College on our kids. I am terrified of losing my job and believe that I would have a hard time replacing that income. Most tell me that I am wrong, but I still feel that way. What I tell my kids is that a Degree gives them more control over their destiny and that I consider myself more lucky than in control.

It's simply a check in the box thing, but to some employers a very important box . . . A degree just helps you get in the door. Its what you do once you are through that makes the man.

I'd take an eager High school drop out who has a fascination for learninig quicker than I'd take an IVY leagueer who thinks the degree makes him worth 100k.

Money can buy you a degree, but it does not make you smart.

Nav

navigator- of course you would. but how often do you find a high school drop out that is eager to learn, or better yet, how could he even convince you? then take the ivy leaguer, who you know had to work his *ss off to get in and graduate. a college degree doesn't guarantee a hard worker, but it does help employers easily screen those looking for a job.

Is there a company hiring engineers without a degree? How about accounts (not book keepers....)? Would you got to a doctor without a degree?

I tell my son he can be anything he wants, as long as he gets a degree first.

Mechanic? Engineering degree for working on prototypes. Management degree to run a big shop.

Bum/hobo? Get a psychology degree to help you manipulate loose change out of people.

Janitor. Get a waste management degree. Some day you'll be tired of scrubbin out the head....

The list goes on and on.

I know you can make it without a degree, but most people make it better with a degree.

Sorry, I'm a bit slanted on the IVY Leagers. I know 2 who got in because of who they knew, not what they new. And I DO know a few kids who didn't get to college, yet they really excell in their field.

As for RubberFrog's comments...Yes, a degree gives you a lot more exposure to field specific information, but it does not make you more intellegent. In the case of licensed professionals, yes, they must have a degree to ensure they know the core body of knowledge. They are also licensed because their profession typically has the potential to harm people. Doctor screws up, people die. Engineer screws up, bridge collapses and people die, Accountant screws up...well there really is no penalty. Accounting is an art, not a science. :D
Should people get a degree...Yes, if they can!
But honestly, how many of the millions of graduates are actually working in the field they majored in?...only a small percentage.

Nav

This is not necessarily the case. If a designed stucture fails within the first 10 years of construction, the architect gets the brunt of the blow. Why???? They are liscensed like a doctor, and they chose the engineer, they drew the plans. Kinda stupid to me, but last year 40+% of architects who were insured were sued.......Obviouslt the engineer will get some too, but architect is first in the pecking order of who gets sued.

Maybe in Gloucester. here in DC, just about everywhere you turn requires a degree and a clearance. I'm gonna hold on to that water pistol a little longer.

I don't really understand the debate here. fact is that people with degrees make more on average than people without. period.

I'm not judging someones worth, I'm just talking about pay scales. There are very few white collar jobs that don't require a degree.

Re: 4 to 9 percent of college graduates took gee whiz courses.

In most technical jobs you get paid for what you do or duties you perform. You have to have mastery of the content required to do those jobs. Formal schooling is one of the ways to master required skills, knowledge, and abilities. Once on the job and performing, schooling and degrees become irrelevent. Unless you want to get promoted and some woman or minority has a higher degree than you and demands the promotion ahead of you even though they are clearly not up to the job. They will sue and usually win. Managers are reluctant to go against a paper qualification if discrimination might be an issue. Rubber Frog is dead on.

I look for attitude first and foremost, then experience, then paper qualifications.

But I agree with frog, larger companies want to see degrees.
