Re: 4.3 volvo Won't start

After viewing the above diagram in this thread posted by Don of the fuel relay compared to the relay in Don's post (picture below) about how to troubleshoot the engine starter system, I realized the relay I was looking at on the fuel pump bracket was not the right one. So I found it behind the black plastic box on the starboard riser. Took off the uppermost two screws and the lowest two screws. Got to it and here are the results with the test light.

A to good ground-produced a light
A jumpered with test light lead to D produced a light
C to good ground with switch on produced no light
A jumpered with test light lead to B and the fuel pump kicked on.

At least the fuel pump worked!

So tomorrow, if when jumpered with a test lead from A to B on the relay, the engine turns over, what next? I have no idea how to get to the neutral kill switch, or test from the keyed switch to the slave relay.

Again, all electronics work, and when the key is in the run position (off, run, start) the hour meter starts clicking. In the start position, nothing.

Thanks!

Did the starter crank during this test? It sounds like you still need to verify that the starter relay is working. When test light is attached through the coil of the relay (86 to 85 in your picture) AND the keyswitch is turned to START, you should see current on that circuit. I would do that first before digging into the keyswitch and control box.

Nothing when test light is attached from 86 to 86 and helper turned key to start. Nothing when 85 and 86 are jumpered together with a wire and key turned to start.

Also, jumpered between A and B (30 and 87) and the engine cranked.

So does this mean new relay? Or am I back to neutral switch diagnosis?

That is probably a good thing, if you jumper 85 and 86, you make a dead short.
You test across 85 and 86 with a meter or test light, not jumper it.
If you don't have power to 86 when the switch is turned to start, and your ign. switch checks out, then you have something wrong between the 2. Neutral safety switch, wiring connection, etc.

Thanks don. If I test 85and86 with a meter, with the switch in the start position, later, what should the voltage be?

Should see near battery voltage.

I think I'm going with the neutral kill switch diagnosis now. I believe this is the control I have:

Any advice on how to get to it? It's pouring rain today and the boats outside, so probably won't be tackling it today. I have had the outer part off before, to replace the rubber boot on the button that you push to disengage the transmission cables and also to tighten up the shift lever with the allen key nut. There was an electrical connection but I think it was only for the trim.
