4.3 volvo Won't start

4.3GLPLKD started right up last week after taking it out of storage. Unhooked battery charger, covered it back up. Tried to start today, turns over great. Did the same procedure last week of pumping the throttle a few times, it's squirting gas into the carb, checked, pulled one of the spark plug wires off the plug and it shot a spark to the riser from 1/4 inch away from contact. Can't figure it out. Brand new spark plugs Distributor cap style ignition.
Suggestions?
Unhooked the kill switch and hooked it back up again. Nothing. No stumble, no cough, nothing. Ancedotal, maybe weak fuel squirts when the wife was pumping throttle, and increased cranking speed when throttle was wide open. Other than that, I got nothing. Hooked the charger back up. Don't have a fuel pressure guage, but wouldn't at least stumble if I'm seeing fuel go in the carb and seeing spark?

Thanks

Re: 4.3 volvo Won't start

I'm working through a similar issue with my 4.3GS PKLD, I belive the only differnece is a 2 vs 4 bbl carb. One thing that you could check without the pressure/vac guage would be the operation of the fuel pump. First I'd unscrew the water/fuel separator and empty the contents into a clear container to check for water. If you're good there, refill the filter with gas and reattach to the fuel pump. There is a relay to the right of the pump, pull it and check for corrosion. You can jumper two pins on the relay socket, on mine its the pin closest to the pump and the one direcly parallel to it fathest from the pump. You should hear the pump running at this point. That would rule out a bad pump.

My engine showed the same symptoms as yours. I'd get a weak squirt from the accelerator pump, but no start, no stumble, nothing. Turned out to be a bad pump

Thanks kellyja. Don't have a pressure/vac gauge, so will try and check for water in gas when I get home. With the ignition on, the fuel pump should be running, correct?

No.
It only comes on during cranking and when the engine starts and the alternator is working.
Do you know where your fuel pump relay is on your engine?

No I do not. Would it be mounted to the same bracket that the fuel pump is? Looking for schematic now.

Which pins can I connect to see if fuel pump is working?

Let's see if I can explain this..... If you are looking down at the filter pump assembly, the relay socket is on the right side. The socket blade closest to the pump is the (+) for the pump, should have a yellow/red wire running from it to the pump. The farthest parallel blade from the one we just identified in the socket (not the middle one) is (12v + should have a red wire).

You need to jump these together.

Pump should sound like an electric motor spinning, as opposed to a buzz. There should be clean gas in the filter while doing this. The gas cools the pump

If you put a jumper wire between terminals 30 and 87, the pump should run. If it does, see if your engine will start and run (on muffs of course).

Here is the wiring diagram for your pump.

Doesn't sound like an electric motor whirring, more like a barely audible squeak that increases in pitch then quits in 4-5 seconds. Take the wire off, reconnect, same thing. Pump gets warm to touch, jumper wire gets warm. ignition on or off no difference. Filled fuel filter up before test. No water in fuel. If it's the pump, this will be the second pump in less than a year.

Thanks for the help. New pump?

kellyja,
it's much more like a buzz. looking for the best price on a pump now.

That's how mine failed - the buzz, and the hot pump. To be sure you can disconnect the fuel line fitting at the top of the pump, then do the jumper thing. You should be squirting gas at 4-8 psi.

Your pump should cross reference with Airtex E8263 - Autozone has them for 92 bucks. Check that part out for yourself, I haven't used it - I found it after I paid waaayy too much at the marina.

Great timing. I was debating on ordering the sierra one from local NAPA for >200 bucks!

90 bucks at auto zone, have it in 7-10 days. 75 at advance auto, have it this afternoon. Will wait and see if it's the right one! Since this will be the second one in a year, the filter is new, the screen where the steel line goes into the carb was clean and the gas poured out of the filter was clean what else can I look for that might be fouling up the pump between the fuel filter and the tank?

Air leak. That is what causes 90% of the pump failures.

Thanks Don. I'll replace the hose from the tank to the filter as well. 1997 boat, I'm guessing from looking it's the original hose.

Re: 4.3 volvo Won't start

New fuel pump is on. Turn the key to try to start it and nothing. All electronics work except for the starter. Every fuse I can find is good. There is no ignition fuse, but two fuses at the positive terminal on the battery. Both good. There is a space on the fuse box for ignition, but no wire on the spade connector. I am assuming that one of the wires from the positive battery terminal with the fuse has been substituted for the ignition fuse. I'll keep racking my brain, and crawling around the boat, but if anyone has any advice on where to start, it would be appreciated.

When I was testing the fuel pump, would I have blown something?

Thanks Don and kellyja for the help to this point.

did you remote the starter relay when you were jumping the pump just make sure you have them back in tho correct pin holes. there is a sticky at the top off the page for starter motor system testing.
Always the same get one thing fixed then another problem appears.

Soooooo, the starter switch checks out, but is the relay I need to be testing the same one that is on the fuel pump assembly?
