Re: 4.3 Mercruiser block cracked

Its tough. Just last year I bought my first I/O boat and was told that the engine ran 1 week ago and that it only needed a new head gasket. I was so overtaken with the cool features it had that I never looked at the side of the engine.
I ended up putting in a new engine and selling the boat and making a couple of bucks, but the engine is the first thing I look at and I even take my borescope with me now.

I missed this one.

Like I said its an expensive lesson, but I have learned alot since then and I owe it all to this forum. I wish I would have found this site before I bought the boat. I found this forum by Googling "water in oil" and the rest is history...

Personally, I hate the JB "hack" jobs and there would be no way I would go out on the water with JB weld plugging a crack.

I can say with certainty a new short block is cheaper than a lawyer. Besides you'd be lucky to get a court date before spring.

My BIL bought a Donzi off Ebay this spring and seller said boat had "some salt water use" He drove to NJ to pick it up and it looked fine, but never bothered to start it due to very heavy rains at the time. Seller said it may need a tune up. He got it home and local marina looked at it and said manifolds were rusted through and engine was not worth fixing. $5,000 later he had a new engine and a boat that worked, and a lesson learned. Living 1500 miles from salt water we are (were) very naive about rust and engine damage
