dont mess around with either.. buy a 4door deisel truck and be done with it .all the power u need, better mpg towing and can pull just about anything . nothing better than passing someone going uphill pulling my rv or boat.

I have an 18ft bowrider that I pull with my 02 explorer with a 4.6L V8. It does a decent job, but only gets about 13 miles to the gallon puttling the boat 3 hours away to our family's vacation home. You can DEFINITELY tell that the boat is back there though! I just passed 128,000 miles on it and it is still runs really strong!

I am a Ford guy through and through, but I would honestly recomend buying a larger SUV or truck to pull your boat with!!! At the VERY least, go with something as new as possible with a V8 (for torque reasons)!

Thank you all for your posts. I have reconsidered and am now looking at a 2008 Jeep Commander V8 4x4. It has the same towing capacity as the V8 Explorer, but is in my price range. Thanks again.

Commander is a nice truck. Which v8? If you get the hemi then it should have the MDS which will help out with the milage when not towing.

Just throwing this out there. I tow my 22 footer with a 2001 Pathfinder 3.5V6. I've never actually HAD to use 4x4 to get it out. The thing pulls like a champ, not fast and most of the time I find myself doing like 5 under just because I want to be aware of my surroundings and be able to stop, but the boat and trailer combined probably weigh 4,000 pounds. It apparently can pull 6-7,000? With the newer 4.0V6 being able to pull 8,000?
