Went to a friend?s house this last weekend to check out his new 3D TV. (Read that as big bucks.) I was totally unimpressed. We watched about 20 minutes of Avatar on Blu-Ray 3D and all I got out of it was a headache. I had to stop watching. Today I got on line to do a little research and found that I am far from alone, 25% to 30% of viewers had the same physical reaction, some even become nauseated from it.

I think I?ll take a pass?

I don't think it is a scam, but I think the technology needs to be refined some more, as with all thing technical, they don't seem to take into account a good cross section to figure out what the physical ramifications could be for the majority of people, I watched about 20 minutes of the same movie at Christmas time and found it interesting, didn't make me sick, but I am not prone to any type of motion sickness and just because you don't get sick on a boat, does not mean you won't get messed up by other visual motion. I think one of these days we will have Hologram type TV's but it takes a while to perfect things, now a days you have to realize the public is your beta testers..

If you have ever been to Disney World and watched any of the 3D stuff they have there...it is simply amazing. Passive glasses, projection images, simply amazing, with no wierd side effects. That is what unlimited money and dedicated engineering get you...but you cannot watch it at all without the glasses. The 3D technology for home use right now is in its infancy. The technology simply is not there (at a mass market price point) to allow you to watch the TV as normal 99% of the time, then 3D when you want to. Not yet.

I thoroughly enjoyed the Disney stuff...no headaches etc, but the home stuff gives me a headache in just a few minutes too. Think I will stick with my regular 63" HD plasma. :D

My son cannot watch anything in 3D. He gets headaches and for some reason his brain, according to the DR. is not wired to interpret 3D. I have tried it in places like Best Buy and for the few minutes I am watching I have no problems. To sit there and watch a 2 hour movie might be different. Personally I wear glasses and I dislike having to put on another pair over my prescription lenses to watch TV.

The wife and I was talking about this a couple of days ago.

Who would want to set in their living room and wear a pair of those glasses so they could watch TV. Not I.

+1. Plus, when the kids destroy them, sit on them, the dog chews them up, you're out another $100+.
I've looked at them in stores and think their picture is terrible. I'm more than happy to stick with my 'old' tech 720p Plasma and HD DirecTV.

my experience is limited to watching something at bestbuy and it's not something I'm interested in owning unless the technology improves, I wasn't impressed.

I'm sure there were many people making threads back in the 60's, color TV, just another fad? 40 years later, HD TV, just another fad?

No, I don't think it's a fad, but I do think it needs to be tweaked before it will take off. I bought some 3D glasses for my computer 10 years ago. I called those things "vomit glasses" because all they did was get me sick and I never get sick. I don't think they were working right.

Give the technology 5 years.

We looked at the 3d TV's but the same thing that "VOMIT" feeling.

Ever looked at aerial photos with the stereo scopic glasses, I wish they could build that into the front of the TV to give you depth.

3D isn't catching on with consumers. Best Buy rolled the dice big on the concept and it's hurting them now. I'll pay the extra couple bucks to watch an occasional movie theater movie in 3D, but I'll take a pass on 3D TV.

I saw a display model and watched their sample shows, not really into it. I think it would be uncomfortable to have to wear 3d glasses to watch tv.

I suspect that if you don't have 20/20 vision the glasses (different pic in each eye, remember) severely aggravate the problem.

IMO. it was the big companies and their eagerness to roll-out 3-D TV to the masses. Hard economic times and lagging electronics sales surely had a decision to release the technology quickly. I also think the consumer pushed back and said "No thanks, not right now". Most consumers have only had an LCD HDTV for only the past several when they truly became affordable for most of the average consumer household budget. I have no interest in a 3-D TV either.... im just not impressed nor willing to shell out any more $$$ for another new technology..... not yet anyway :)

Re: "3D" Tv's, just another scam?

When 3d tv came out, I felt it was a solution looking for a problem. I heard a news piece late last year from a 3d tv industry science expert who said the challenges to 3d tv without the glasses were astronomical and that is a large understatement with extra emphasis. Then, not long after I read how they are close to having 3d tv without the glasses. I am still scratching my head. There are certain things I think of as for "other people" such as new cars and 3d tv is one of them.
