There is a cutoff switch that temporarily stalls the motor that allows the gears to mesh without force from the turning motor. I would bet that your problem lies somewhere in that vicinity.

I am sure there is a ton of info on this topic if you search the archives.

sorry....when you move the shifter this switch temporarily stalls the motor allowing the gears to mesh smoothly....search for shift interrupt switch.

Ayuh,.... The switch should move only when comin' Outa gear, 'n only in the water,....

Nothin' to do with goin' into gear,...
It should Never move when on the wagon,.....
If it does, the lower shift cable is bad, 'n needs replacin',....

Welcome Aboard smoky,... Is the shift switch movin' when ya shift into gear,..??

As old as yer boat is, My 1st guess is the lower shift cable is bad,....

in or out of gear....regardless, it stalls the motor at some point. Like he said, lower shift cable is probably 99% the culprit.

Being an Alpha1 I`m guessing the shift shoe was not correctly indexed and its in reverse when in a straight line. Trying to shift into fwd activates the shift interupter switch because it cant move the shift shoe.

My old boat would stall sometimes shifting forward or reverse. More so when you shifted in reverse. Turned out to be a bad shift cable that was also partially melted cause it was routed incorrectly
