i just bought this engine
reverse works fine
fwd is like it isnt there
the very first time i put it in fwd it went for about 2 seconds then came out.
so while the engine was off
i put the the engine in reverse (manually with the leaver on the side of the engine) and spin the prop, it doesnt spin and you can feel the compression of the motor
i slowly move the gear changing leaver to the neutral position, its points straight up and down but the prop wont spin freely (its still in reverse)
i move it half way between fwd and neutral and about in the middle there it comes out of reverse, you feel the prop will spin freely
you push the leaver hard fwd to the fwd position and the prob spins freely
as if its in neutral
i know its bad to change gears slowly while its running
however the engine wasnt running at the time
a friend told me it could be the dog clutch
but when the leaver is pushed hard fwd the prop spins and you cant feel it touch any teeth at all

cheers :)

Re: 35 hp johnson 1982 gearbox problem

first it could be the clutch dog. but it sounds, more like someone dropped the lower unit, and twisted the shift linkage, so that the shift linkage is out of the proper measurement. this is a common problem when someone works without a Johnson OEM service manual. i do not have the manual for your motor, but the shift linkage has to be set at a certain height, for it to work properly. you can get the OEM manual at outboardbooks.com.

I agree it sounds like the linkage. I'd investigate that before tearing the LU apart.

To change gears when not running, you spin the prop while shifting. Take the water intake screens off and see if the two parts (lower and upper) of the shift shaft move together. There is a split plastic compression piece that has to be in the coupler, around the top part of the shaft, that may be missing. Hold the lower nut static and loosen the upper...slide it up and see if the fitting is in there. Also, you may need to adjust the shifting dog under the hood. And....don't turn the motor over with the prop unless you are sure all electrics are dead off...you don't want to have a hold of the prop when the motor starts. An old mechanic told me of a guy that lost a couple fingers that way.

Re: 35 hp johnson 1982 gearbox problem

that manual is $92.65 US
there isnt a cheaper way to do it?
i had a look under the water intake screens
there is a bar that comes down to what looks like 2 nuts screwed together then the bar comes out the bottom
i didnt undo it tho
should i undo those 2 nuts from each other and look inside?
the bar moves up and down fine when i move the gear changing leaver

No, not unless the rods are slipping. Maybe you have a library with the manual? If you do take the nuts apart, hold the bottom one so it doesn't move and just loosen the top one. If you turn the bottom one you can unscrew it from the shift fork inside the case and that's a pain. On the outside of your motor, by the shifter, you should have a deal with two bolts. Pop your hood and look inside in that area. You should see a plastic rocker that moves with the shifter. When in nuetral, your shifter should be in the center and feel a detent like feel. If not, loosen the two bolts and rock the plastic thing back and forth till it's centered...then tighten the bolts being carefull not to torque the plastic deal forward. Make sure your shift lever isn't slipping also.

#12 is the shifter yoke and connector.

There are 5 models of 35HP Johnson's for 1982. I would think the differences are shaft length and whether it's electric start or not. Check out the shopevinrude link below. Select Johnson, then your year and model. Open the gearcase file folder and zoom in. Check the parts list.
