Scipper - The thing with most Salmonoids on the Gr Lakes is that, other than at spawning time they're basically nomads. On Sunday, the brothers of the one you caught on Saturday could be 10 miles away. Also on some days they'll come up from 200 ft down in the water column to hit your lure at 40Ft down, and on others if you're not within 5 ft of them, they won't move. (Kings/Cohos)

God I love fishing. I want to learn how you guys on the LOU do it so bad. I'm just not ready (or able) to commit to a boat suitable for the deep water on lake ontario as it's primary use.

Keep knockin em out Tom. Maybe one of these days you can teach me how to get those big lake fish.

I agree that the DEC has done a good job with NY waters. I will say this though, when you are the only boat within a mile on Skaneateles Lake, and a 17 foot metal boat with 3 large men in Military BDUs approaches you that fast, well lets just say that u may wanna bring some extra pants:p. I wish they would have something on the boat like the word "police" or a flashing light.

Get a Bullit bass boat with a 300 on it and let them chase you for a while, when you finally pull over tell them you didn't know who they were and they need to identify themselves better.

All of Marine police and game wardens have blue lights on their boats and there's no mistaking them.

If you are paying attention having more lines out will help you to become a 10%'er. What I mean is you might learn what depth/temp the fish are at for example and add that to the old memory bank.

In fishing there is knowledge and there is experience. Ever time I fish a new body of water I am reminded of how much I rely on my experience to know where the fish are. I'll waste 1/2 a trip on new water just trying to find the fish. I'm talking bass here but I'd bet this translates to salmonoids.

One thing we have on Lake Ontario is a dedicated website and a twitter setup with up to the minute fishing reports giving us real time information about just about everything we need to know.Add to that that almost every Ontario fisherman has marine radio on board and you will see that this makes for easier fish searching.
Oh by the way ,bass fishing is for people who don't know how to catch salmon.

You got me there. I have never even tried to catch salmon. Well other than the three I caught last week, but shore fishing when they are spawning doesn't count.

I am a member on the LOU. it's the initial investment into a good setup for salmon that keeps me away. I'd need at least a bigger boat, downriggers, better sonar, rods and reels for trolling (as opposed to my bass stuff), and flashers, spoons, planar boards (optional).

Maybe one day, but not in the near future. For anyone reading this let me tell you, Longline, and rolmops are pretty prominent in the local lake fishing community.

Re: "3 rod rule" passed into law _ NYS

Over the summer I've discovered that I've caught fewer fish using 3 rods as compared to fewer rods. So I switched to 2 rods.

I assume this has to do with how much attention I can give to each rod.

This fall I've discovered that I catch more fish on one rod that two. I think it's that attention issue again.

I have decided that I'm sticking with (at least) two. I'm not spending 10's of thousands of bucks on a boat and all to just fish one rod!

So, I down-rig one rod for bottom fishing stupid fish, and use my expensive rod/Stradic reel for jigging after the big, smart ones.

Haven't caught a big smart one yet, but the bottom rod brings me home plenty of channel catfish for dinner.

Where fish is plenty and eager to bite, one rod is the right choice. When you have to cover a lot of water with different species at different depth because of the temperature that they prefer, 3 rods are better.
I often have one rigger rod close to the bottom, sometimes at 180 feet just to catch a big stupid lake trout. It is sort of fun to catch one.But after that the rigger comes up to thermocline.
My favorite setup is 2 riggers down at the thermocline and 2 dipsy divers out at somewhere around 200 and 250 feet(length of line, not depth) then on the planer boards 2 10 color lead cores and 2 8 color lead cores.and to top it of one copper line at 450 feet out.It takes 3 people to run that much, but it is very effective.

Haha, Yeah I wasn't gonna outrun them in my 40hp when they were running a 170hp lol. I thought blue lights were only for volunteer police and firefighters?? They definitely didn't have any lights on this one, not even for running at night.

NYS stocks 1.5 million salmonoids in Lake Ontario every year. It's a put & take fishery as they only live 3-4 yrs. This will give the recreational lake guys, especially the small crews a little more potential to locate the fish. It's a big deep lake & those fish scatter throughout the water column. It doesn't mean they'll catch them, it means it'll help them locate active fish. Daily creel limits remain unchanged.

Finally a stimulus package that doesn't cost the taxpayer anything!

I agree it will help locate and allow for more hook ups which is nice especially if you fish alone like myself and my father-in-law. We always keep one low by the motor just to keep them honest. Either way it shouldn't make a huge difference because the limit on the fish haven't changed.

Spring won't come soon enough.

There are some unintended side effects. Already I have had many more hookups and once a salmon has been brought up from 90 feet of water and put through the trauma of a wound in the mouth and a fight for its life and being brought into a boat,it often is difficult for them to survive after being released.

Your mistake is bringing them into the boat, if the fish isn't a "keeper" it shouldn't be taken out of the water.

Does anyone know if this applies to ice fishing too? I would assume it does. I think that would mean I can have 1 more tip-up/rod.

It does NOT apply to ice fishing.

Dang! It must really suck to fish in NY and Penn. eh?;)

Down here in 'Bama I troll with 8 rods and could use 100 if I wanted to... but I haven't caught a Salmon... yet.:D

We have 2 lakes down here that have a 3 rod limit and you should hear all the screeching, whining, and crying about it that some of the fishermen do, they just don't know how good we have it.

Ahmen--most of the lakes I fish here we get 5 per person and 2 hooks per line--we do have it good.

Thanx CF1.

UPDATE: 3 lines ARE permitted on most waters in NYS for ice fishing. NYSDEC just issued a press release stating that. Check local water regs.

You have to find your own ice tho. Strange that it's the middle of January & we don't have any ice!

My buddies and I have finally found some ice up in the Adirondacks. Last weekend we caught 45+ fish. It was a great start to the season.

Here in MI last I checked we're allowed to use 3 rods and 6 hooks per line. I can only ever seem to use two and then down to one if I ever take my signifigant other out with me. She always gets the lines tangled. Still love her for some reason though
