Yesterday I was on the lake cruising at 3000 rpms and the boat jumped out of gear. I shifted back into neutral then I went into forward and all was good and we started back cruising for anther 30 minutes. Then the rpms jumped and there was smoke in my engine compartment. It was coming out of the bell housing area and it smelled like rubber burning.
The drive shaft will spin with motor running but it will not transfer the power to the out drive. When I got the boat out of the water I noticed that my prop was damaged. I suspect that I hit something the first time it jumped out of gear and the second time was the result of the damage that had occurred. I have been told that there is a coupler in there that may have been damaged.

Re: 3.0 Mercruiser Coupler

i do agree with bubba on. . . . . .If i had to choose (this is with me doing the work) between replacing a (1200-1700$) out drive or a $350 coupler, i would do the coupler in a heart beat. ya with the outdrive you have a hole lot less work involved but pulling the motor on a 3.o (at least mine) really aint that hard.
