Hey so I have an 1988 Mercruiser 3.0L that keeps dying out after crusing for about 45 minutes then will not restart. I recently replaced the fuel filter that was really dirty and smashed a little. Is this a carb issue? I feel like a lot of junk probably got into it. Once the engine cools down I'm able to restart it again.

Also it did sit for almost two years. I mixed new gas with the old stuff.

Probably have multiple things going on. When it dies and will not restart does it have spark? Check with inexpensive spark gap tester. Fuel tank vent could be plugged, fuel system is definitely contaminated likely tank lines and carb need to be cleaned, but I would think that would not allow restart once cool, think that would be more like igntion

I put new plugs in and a point was fixed. But I don't know if it's still sparking after it shuts down

Welcome
Pretty sure you have a lack fuel issue

Boat sat for couple years and new gas was put into old. Well that made a bunch more of bad gas. If it runs long enough and more good gas dilutes the bad it will slowly get better

Dirty and smashed filter means the carb needs to come apart and cleaned.

Could remove the fuel line from the carb and get the line pointing toward a catch can or something. Crank it over some and see if you can get a steady pumps of gas coming out. Look close at the gas, is it clean and clear, and does it smell like gas?

Hey thanks! Yeah a few people are saying I need to get rid of that gas. Maybe I'll pump it out and clean the carb and see what happens. I watched some videos on carb cleaning. Do I need to buy a kit and replace gaskets/etc?

Yes, you need a overhaul kit
Look up Mikes carburetor on the net. Great place to buy kits and he will help with any questions you have about parts needed
