3.0 Idle Question

In the manual it says the idle in gear should be around 700. And while tuning the carb around 550-600.

My problem is the engine shakes and dies when I try to turn the idle down that low, should I be turning the fuel mixture screw in/out to compensate for turning the idle down??

My idle is currently 1000rpm or 3.8 mph, and I would like it slower if that isn't normal.

I used an inductive tach/timing light to adjust the idle mixture first. Turned the mixture screw in until the RPM's began to drop..then backed it out (counting the turns) until it began to drop again...then split the difference.

From there, it is easy to set the idle speed...still using the inductive digital tach/timing light. My 3.0L idle speed is set to 700...1000 is way to hard on the gears when shifting.

The helm (engine) tach is useless for any fine tuning...!

Re: 3.0 Idle Question

My 3.0LX is roughly the same ROCKY ROADS but my idle is just above 650 and it shifts and runs smooth.
