But if jb weld will hold temporarily ill run it like that and keep an eye on it.
You have nothing to lose by trying or have someone actually weld it.If you JB it ,dont use the quick set.Only use the original which will want to sag while curing.Prep is most important.Have you checked it the motor is free wheeling or locked up?? That will help make up your mind to try it or not.Charlie btw great video on youtube on "fixing a cylinder with Jb " it
was on a lawn mower engine and it worked. The guy doing the test does all kinds of tests and comparison videos.

I'm not condoning JB, But my dad closed up a tecumsi/tejunksi block that a thrown rod left... about a 2"x3" hole., that was in the 80's that engine is still on my very old go-cart. today.

You can make jb do amazing things with heat to flow in and damming up with either foil duct tape and even electrical tape. used separately... you have to be careful with heat & e.tape.
It might be worth a $5.00 shot/gamble.
But it could leave you sitting in the water too.
Not how I would normally fix things.

At the end of the day, its your idea and your boat(your call)

Motors not locked up and yes I cleaned it up real good with a few different sanders and such. Then used acetone I used the original and will know tomorrow its been 24 hrs. Just giving it a bit longer.

All welded I think along as it's just exterior crack I am golden I am going to replace manifold regardless of this working or not. I learned the hard way on last boat that a faulty manifold can do a lot of damage.

I think I already see a problem and it is with your prep of the surface or lack of..There should not be any paint on or around the surface to be repaired because it should be ground or sanded or wheeled to bare metal. It does not appear that you prepped properly for the JB to adhere.IT DONT STICK TO PAINT.I hope I am incorrect however I would not expect success here due to user error.Charlie

Big question is was it stored under a roof all these years otherwise odds are you've got rot.

The surface was cleaned 1/2" all the way around the crack and it also was hit with rough grit sand paper.

As for rot. There is 0 rot throughout the boat it was garage kept.

Jb weld doing its thing been running 20 minutes now no issues.

Ran it for 1 hr. No issues. The guy must just not known a ton about boats. Glad I got in there and got this one. I'll still change the manifold but I'll run it on lake sometime this week and probably for many years to come.

I repaired a crack about 3" long back in the early '70s with PC-7 on a 120 Mercruiser. Boat stayed in the family for about 8 years. About 20 or so years later I ran into the 4th owner on the lake and it was still going strong. Sometimes you get lucky.

I fully expect to have to upgrade the engine. But this close to start of season I'd like to get the year out of it at least but we will see. Time will tell.

Another wild idea from a space cadet.-------Fabricate a bracket using the motor mount.-----Use the bracket to hold a rubber gasket / RTV over your repair area with a backing plate .----Make the plate from say 3/16" and extend it by 1" all around your repair area.----Might work and nobody will see it.

Just keep an eye on the oil. My neighbor used his boat 3-4 times after he was too lazy to winterize before he saw water in the oil.

Cheap boats are out there if you look. Dirt cheap boats are usually because of a reason.

If a guy was so poor on maintenance that he let the block crack, what else did he not maintain?

I don't know for sure re. that vintage, but my guess is that the boat has wood stringers. It's current age is just about when they would be rotten if they were rode hard and put away wet.

The period that Stingray went to Volvo were not their best years. I toured their Hartsville plant in 2004 and I was not impressed.
I looked for this one for approx.: My whole life. lol I dont believe it was rode much at all. I think it was garage kept as well. This looks like a boat that was likely taken out 1x per year for maybe a long weekend and thats it. Everything flawless other then the little crack I just patched up.

I know exactly where you are coming from. I once saw a boat in the early 1960's and decided I had to have one just like it. I didn't find one until 2005, and it was the proverbial "barn find". It was already over 50 years old and the registration sticker on the bow indicated it hadn't been used for about 30 years.

The good part is that it it is all wood so it didn't need a marine surveyor to look at it. This year she is 70 years old and still looks like it came from the factory yesterday.

OTOH, a buddy bought a 20 year old Bayliner that was so pristine that it also looked like it just came from the factory. It had been kept in a heated garage, covered, for its whole life. Not a scratch and the upholstery was perfect. He didn't get a survey. His cursory survey showed no issues at all. Then, the first time out his son jumped into the boat off the dock (rather than just climbing in) and he put his foot right thru the deck. Although the deck "seemed" OK, it was rotten underneath all the way to the keel.

Turned out the PO was meticulous about polishing and covering, but the let the bilge full of water all the time.

Best wishes - hope you have good luck.

So have now about 8 hours on it without issue. Only issue may not be an issue at all after doing some reading but the SX outdrive clunks pretty hard into reverse. I turned the throttle positioner down and got same result. checked fluids all looks good so I am unsure. Just gonna keep running it the way it is.

It was whatever came with it since it is light tan I assume it is volvo. I ordered some but since I am putting it in the water for the season I may not get a chance to change it till 2nd week of June. But between now and then I may only put about 8 more hours on it.
