I have a 240 OMC and drive see pics got the outdrive ready to pull off but the shift cable is still attached at the top of the back of the engine. See that pic circled area. Question is how does it come off. First what gear should it be in? I lifted the pin and swung out the two arms behind where the cable goes into the mechanism. But it’s still locked in. There is a little cap behind the mechanism does that have a purpose or is there something else I need to do to get the cable out?

Get a manual from https://outboardbooks.com/ or at a minimum watch the videos on sterndrive.info

You have to pull the ESA apart and feed the cable out the back of the boat

The replacement cost of that cable is about $800
