228 mercruiser thermostat

I have 1977 228 mercruiser inboards. Can someone tell me if the thermostat goes in the intake manifold or on top of the thermostat housing?

Download manual 3. It is the same as mine

28 coastal has them on top under the cap ,not in the intake manifold
but since we dont know what thermostat housing you currently have on the motor, it`s just a guess.
