Is it common for an engine (20hp) to have an electric start but no charging system? I haven't pulled it apart enough yet to determine if it has a stator assembly, but it definately does not have a rectifier. Can that system be added on?

it is not uncommon, what year and brand is it. if you are wanting to run trolling motor, etc off the same battery, the charging system will not keep up the battery, for that purpose. it only maintains the battery for starting, it takes a long run at wot for these small systems to do any real good. buy a good schumacher battery charger.

It's an Evinrude '88. Don't want to run much off it other than lights. Boat is kept in water and I'm not able to charge battery unless I lug it home.

You could add a charging system, but it's $$$. Better to carry the battery and charge it at home. Use one of those little folding luggage carts or something to make the job easier.

you can do a lot of lugging, for what it will cost for the system. get some of the new LED lights, they use far less power. besides if you kill the battery as long as the motor is tuned, it's easy to pull start.

Thanks. Hate to see power going to waste these days, but also don't need yet another expensive project for this motor.
