Dawson played collegiately at Purdue before being taken by the Pittsburgh Steelers with the fifth pick in the 1957 draft. He played with the Steelers through the 1959 season, before being traded to the Cleveland Browns. He was released by that team after the 1961 season and signed with the Dallas Texans in 1962. The team moved to Kansas City and became the Chiefs in 1963, and Dawson’s career took off.
He played with the team through the 1975 season, and was the MVP of the team’s Super Bowl IV win. Dawson was the NFL’s Man of the Year in 1973, and put together a long list of accolades across his tenure with the team. His No. 16 was retired by the Chiefs, and he was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1987
