This is the first year in Franklin's tenure as a head coach that he had players opt out of the bowl game. Graduate early, yes, but skip the final game of the season ... a first for him. There seems to be a lot of that going around. Franklin has 5 players that entered the Transfer Portal already. Back-up QB Tariq Roberson is headed to UConn. So PSU enters their Bowl game with 5 players leaving the team for other teams, 6 players not playing because they don't want to get hurt, and 1 player who retired for medical reasons.Opting out seems to be contagious this year, more so than past years, or I'm just paying more attention...
Of the PSU players that opted out, linebacker Ellis Brooks makes the most sense to me. He played the last 4 games with an injured hand and would like to get the hand healed for the next level. But then I believe he has accepted an invitation to one of the Senior Bowl Games, as have a few other PSU opt-outs. Guess they won't get hurt in those games.
