Opting out seems to be contagious this year, more so than past years, or I'm just paying more attention...
This is the first year in Franklin's tenure as a head coach that he had players opt out of the bowl game. Graduate early, yes, but skip the final game of the season ... a first for him. There seems to be a lot of that going around. Franklin has 5 players that entered the Transfer Portal already. Back-up QB Tariq Roberson is headed to UConn. So PSU enters their Bowl game with 5 players leaving the team for other teams, 6 players not playing because they don't want to get hurt, and 1 player who retired for medical reasons.

Of the PSU players that opted out, linebacker Ellis Brooks makes the most sense to me. He played the last 4 games with an injured hand and would like to get the hand healed for the next level. But then I believe he has accepted an invitation to one of the Senior Bowl Games, as have a few other PSU opt-outs. Guess they won't get hurt in those games.

Too many bowls...If you are 6-6, shouldn't be playing in a bowl like these two teams.
I agree. I believe there's 44 this year. But, it's all about the mighty $..... The networks, most play on ESPN/ABC so Disney gets a big chunk, to bowl exec's, to schools getting their cut from the conference kitty, to cities that draw in a bunch of peeps, etc, etc... 5-7 teams can make a bowl if there isn't enough 6-6 teams. If a person/co has an extra $300k lying around gathering dust, they too can host a low end bowl. Just need to commit for 3yrs...
The Bruce Bowl has a nice ring to it.....😁

The sad thing is, most schools actually lose money sending their schools to these smaller bowls so it's not really a money maker for the schools. That's why you don't hear many schools chiming in to replace some of these covid cancellations.

Yeah, there's a bunch of the smaller bowls where schools lose $. They just get national exposure for the school, it helps if they win....

They do it for other reasons. Any other sport besides men's football and basketball wouldn't exist if they only did it to make money.

Purdue / Tenn duking it out four TD's in 4 minutes. Tied at 45 with 1:35 left.

MSU up 10-7 over Pitt. Pickett opted out, Nick Paddy scored the TD for Pitt but injured his shoulder and is done, so Pitt is relying on QB #3

Walker for MSU opted out. B1G RB of the year. 2nd overall? Refs are missing serious calls. The last one the guy didn't step out of bounds. Earlier the refs didnt reverse a non fumble call that should have been MSUs ball....🙄

I think Pitt missing their first two QBs is a way bigger handicap.
