375 HP out of a 3.5 L engine (210 Cu In. +/- ) . . . that is a crazy amount of power. If I ever get a truck, that would be on my short list. Could even tow my 330 SS :) :thumb:

Sorry I have to disagree, while it might be able to tow it on a flat surface, it doesn't have much torque. Like a formula one motor has 1000 hp at 10,000 RPM, it would have a heck of a time pulling a PWC up a hill from a dead start

There is still no replacement for displacement IMO

When discussing towing, HP don't mean nothing, you need torque, racecars have a lot of Horsepower, but not so much torque, they can go fast, but watch them when they hit a head wind, don't have so much speed anymore.

375 HP @ 5000 RPM
470 ft-lbs of Torque @ 3500 RPM

:noidea:

Surprised me . . .

With the Eco Boost you might check the manual and see if premium fuel is required when towing at maximum load (or when towing anything). There is no free lunch when it comes to creating power from a gasoline engine. A small engine under high boost can certainly make power. It does that by forcing more air and fuel into the engine. Economy comes from light load, flat road and low boost. So I would be checking with people you know who actually know their vehicles and can give you real world economy, performance and towing data.

dodge ram 420 ft lbs at 3950 rpm.there goes the theory that the 3.5 doesn't have power. For what the op has in mind the ecoboost is plenty powerful enough.Personally I would look at the 5 litre ford as its got plenty of power and might be a fair cost savings also. But for anything short of diesel duty the 3.5 is fine .Though we don't have the major mountains like out west we do have some pretty serious climbs and anybody ive chatted with that had a booster and a fair size trailer said they were great with lots of go.

Thanks for the info everyone. Went with the Ecoboost. Pick it up in the morning. I think either would be great, but got a better deal on the Ford. Xlt 4x4 with just about every possible option including max tow PKG, off road PKG... for $40k (53k msrp).

i have a 2017 big horn with crew cab, hemi and eight speed trans,4x4 and pull a 27 foot jayco camper 5000lbs dry weight, 6000 loaded. the truck pulls it no problem, you know it back there but plenty of pulling power. Any camper of that size and weight is recommended to have weight distribution bars and sway control bar. It squats the back of the truck a fair bit without the bars. the big horn has a heavier shock package and extra trans and oil coolers, i have stock gears and am rated to 8000 lbs, with the optional gear i think its a 392 gear you are rated to 10000 lbs.

B.I.L. has 11'' Eco with 150K. NO issues other than he overextended spark plug replacement. Had it done at 130 K and one coil pack.

He grossly overloads the thing. Saw his trailer at 12.5K once. Towed 700 miles with lumber. Towed it fine.

I put 80 K on a 16 Expedition with ECO-problems-ZERO.

Well, I am loving mine with 53 miles on it so far. It's my first new truck in 17 years. Bought my 2001 new. The best part is that I can actually tow the Maxum with this thing. I am only planning short trips from the harbor to dry dock. I wasn't thinking I would find a 1/2 ton that can do that comfortably.

The ecoboost, like all DI engines gets carbon deposit build up on the intake valves. Which will cause eratic operation and set CEL. Normally these can be cleaned chemically, but doing that on the Turbocharged Ecoboost usually results in a destroyed turbo. Ford solution was to replace the cylinder head(s). That's fine while the engine is under warranty, but at some point it will become an owner expense. The alternate is to pull the heads and scrape the carbon off the valves, that too is not cheap. These problems were well documented, and I think there is still a class action suit against Ford still ongoing
This is the problem when people don't do just a little research. The 2018 Eco Boost now has a set of injectors before the valves so that is no longer an issue.

I just bought a 2018 EcoBoost myself and its a great truck. Gets over 20MPG not towing on the highway and is a beast towing especially at altitude. I will never buy a normally aspirated engine again for towing.

One of the best things...36 gallon fuel tank. I have an over 700 mile range on the highway not towing.

It is not required.

That is a very good deal. I couldn't find exactly what I wanted so I ordered mine. I wanted white with beige leather interior, camper mirrors and adaptive cruise(best option ever).

My 2018 3.5L Ecoboost is the most powerful truck I have ever owned. It pulls the Wellcraft in my signature better than any vehicle I have ever pulled it with. It also has a 10 speed transmission and you can hardly feel it shift. Pulls better that 2 of the suburbans I owned. One had a 7.4L and the other the 6.0.

Going up to Lake Tahoe with an elevation over 8K, it has the same power as sea level.

We have a 5.4 Expedition right now. Goal is to upgrade within the next year to an Ecoboost one. Had a 2018 as a rental when were were in NOLA this year, and I was hooked. Just need to come up with a spare 70k now LOL.

Glad your happy but guess you have never owned a 6+L diesel. My Rinker weights about the same as yours and mine doesn't even shift out of over drive. Now pulling my 11K Formula, sure does down shift

During a brief period(spring 2015) when my common sense had taken a vacation, I was thinking of buying a new Mustang. It was then I came across all the problems of the Ecoboost. As I realized I would never be comfortable with any Ford product, I lost all interest and never kept updated.
However what I said will be something to keep in mind for anyone buying a preowned/used Ecoboost

If you ever buy a used F-150 3.5 EcoBoost, 2018 is as early as you want to get. 2017 was the first year of the 10speed and it doesn't have the upgraded fuel injection. The 10 speed transmission in these is a joint venture with GM so the GM 1/2Ts will be getting them in 2019.

I was going to get a 3/4T Chevy with the Duramax but with the new emission equipment on the diesels these days, you face hefty repair costs in the future...no thanks. My parents own a 1T Chevy with a Duramax so very aware of the power. Just not needed for what I tow.

Diesel is around $0.35 more than regular these days in CA so the cost savings of running diesel is not there anymore.

It was a tough choice buying a Ford since I am a GM guy..I used to work for GM in the electronics division for awhile and still get family discounts.
