Etec model R150DSLAAB with remote steering.
I know nothing about how “remote steering” works. Does this steering system need power to work?
Reason is I’m looking at a boat to buy that has not operated for two years. Steering is locked in position. Stored under cover in an area that does not freeze. Motor installed in 2021. Used that summer and next, has been idle since.
I cannot imagine steering seizing up on a new system after two years. Can’t find any info online on how it works.

If it's a 2013 then it's a g1 so it's just a normal steering cable or hydraulic system. Most likely it's a stuck cable and it very common.

Slide hammer, heat or whatever, it wouldn't be something that would stop me from buying a motor....just might help in negotiating a price.

What's does he want for it and do you have a print out from the ECM?

Ran the serial number with a Evinrude mechanic, motor is clean and still under warranty until 2027. The fella passed away and family is selling it. Apparently properly winterized properly before it was stored. Beauty Double Eagle 185 and price is more than fair. Gonna go look at it again today

"installed in 2021" "warrantee until 2027" "mechanic"

This does not sound like a 2013 outboard.

The Gen 2 had issues with their integrated steering system. I'm thinking maybe you haven't properly identified this motor.

I thought the lag in production and installation was odd as well. Wife said it was bought at 2021 boat show and installed, Evinrude dealer ran serial number, registered to the fella we are talking to. Says warrantee until 2027. Included info plate from motor and screen shot from crappy video my brother took.

It's a gen 1. You say Evinrude mechanic....there really isn't any. Evinrude is shut down.

There is former mechanics and they are honoring warrantees and making parts so I guess that's what they mean.

I purchased a 2009 in 2011 so there can be a discrepancy and it came with a 5 year warranty bumped up from the factory 3 year warranty as a promotion. Gen 2 had 10 years warranty's to help calm people when they started having issues with that outboard mainly the fly by wire steering mechanism.

Not sure the one your looking at has the right information. Either way it sounds like a good old stuck steering cable.

For more proof, here is the swivel assembly for that motor.

Standard tilt tube is clearly shown.

No, we have shops here that work on Evinrudes. This fella has access to all the info. Gave him the serial number and he pulled all the info on it. Current owner, service detsils, etc…

You are likely looking at something similiar to this video demonstrated for a marine service shop.

If it is salt water outboard, you have your work cut out for you.

First I would just remove the engine steering arm to cable and verify the engine swivels on its own. Then I heat the crap out of the tilt brackets while beating on them.

Now that is what I do if the cable is stuck to the tilt tube. If the cable is froze to itself then that's easy. Unscrew the secure nut and pull it out, replace it and your golden. Some motors, depending on the boat the motors have to be partially removed to get it out. I had one break on me while I had it moored on a buoy. I sawed it off and installed a baystar steering system. (Hydraulic) For your motor is use a Seastar or equivalent.

I still don't understand why you care about the helm ....what you want is a computer breakdown of all the history. Didn't your Evinrude mechanic suggest that?

Great information. We will be going back tomorrow to have a good look at it all. Yes, the mechanic suggested a reading of the computer breakdown. Will get that done as well.

Me and my brain, steering not tilt/trim.

Different process but can be just as difficult or worse if disconnecting the steering arm from the steering cable does not free up the outboard.

If steering is frozen on the outboard itself, that usually requires removing power head and several other things that don't come off without a fight on salt water outboards.

Odds are, the above statement has not happened.

When they mounted the motor there is no reason they put a new cable on if it was working correctly.

One nut to remove will explain the whole story.

Problem could also be at the helm.

True that. Would not necessarily change steering cable. New motor would just be throttle and shifters
