Re: 2012 Bayliner 185 BR

There's about 5-6 Marina's in my city and neighbouring cities (all within 20 minute drive, all are even bussable) that I will probably keep the boat in one of them, and when I go to my grandads he's got a boathouse that I can use, or store it at the dock or in his 100' by 25' shed :)

I'm really liking the Glastron GT 225.

It has like 10 different motor options though, and really don't know where to start... and what are the 350 Magnum engions? V8s? 5.0s?
So lost on that part.

Here are the motor options:

4.3L MPI MerCruiser (220 hp)
350 Magnum MPI Alpha MerCruiser (300 hp)
5.0L MPI MerCruiser (260 hp)
4.3 GXi Volvo Penta (225 hp)
5.7 Gi Volvo Penta (300 hp)
5.0 GXi Volvo Penta (270 hp)
5.0 GXiC Volvo Penta (270 hp)
5.0L MPI EC MerCruiser (260 hp)
5.7 GiC Volvo Penta (300 hp)
350 Magnum MPI EC Alpha MerCruiser (300 hp)

Re: 2012 Bayliner 185 BR

You have a LOT of test rides to DO. Try EVERY one of the engines in the boat you like.

LIFE IS GOOD. Enjoy the test rides.

Actually the more over sized the engine the more prop walk ( sideways stern jumping ) you will get. I wanted to save some money on the Chap. Should have listned to the salesman. He said Dual Prop would make docking a snap. They did not have a Dual prop available. Nor any other dealers. SOOOO I should have waited to testride a Dual Prop. Did later. Should have bought the dual prop.

We can only give you our experiences.......................You HAVE to go to as many dealers as necessary to test ALL the combinations.
I ordered my Chap in December & stated I wanted the boat ready on May 1st in the water. Dealer had no problem doing it MY WAY. I have the money. It is done my way.

I'm going to test drive everything I like, and will have my grandad with me who's been boating since the 50s, if not longer.

350 is a V8. It is a marinized GM engine which is based on the Corvette 350 V8, which is a 5.7liter, 350 cubic inch V8. Rock solid.

The 4.3 engine (V6) is the 5.7 (V8) with two cylinders lopped off.

Well, not a Corvette from the past decade or so. Just the old-fashioned cast iron block smallblock Chevy, used in a bajillion cars and trucks over the past 50+ years. But I agree they are solid!

I vote the 350 Magnum MPI Alpha MerCruiser (300 hp) as it's very close to the 5.0 in weight but more power, and as it is a 350 the parts will be cheap and readily available, and if you really get that need for speed you can always get more power out of it with many many aftermarket parts for it, as long as you can find someone to retune it.

Football

Make sure you and your Grandad BRING YOUR OWN LIFEJACKETS.....You WILL definately be doing over 55 mph in a convertable with no seatbelts, rollbar or airbags. Yes, stuff can happen when least expected.

DO NOT go out on smooth days!!!! Postpone a testing untill there is about 8" to 12" of chop.
I do ALL my WOT in front of a well developed housing & people that are visable. Why ? They will call 911 LONG before anybody in my boat will. Make sure the salesman knows a area like that.
Actually... I would like you to talk to the sales manager of EACH dealer that you are going to test a boat in. Tell him you need a GOOD boat handling salesman to help you go WOT. Remember. You have a lot to learn with a salesman who is USED TO WOT running.

Get your Grandad to try the dual prop in a practice docking.

Plan on a nice lunch to discuss the good & betters of all the boats. You may have a hard time picking a clear winner. :)

Enjoy the time. :)

The 19 foot chappy is 500 pounds lighter, but 220 HP is the max you could go, so because of the lighter weight, the 220 on the chappy would go faster then the 220 on the bayliner i assume?

That's actually a sad state of affairs all around. The lowest weight 19 foot Chaparral has always been at least 3000lbs and even my 18 footer is 2950lbs with the tiny 4.3 liter. The H20 model Chaparrals are a giant leap backwards compared to what they have produced for a decade. They shaved off over 500lbs on this new line of models compared to their SSi models.

Re: 2012 Bayliner 185 BR

I bought a 2011 Bayliner 185 with the 190 M/CA1. This boat has a TON of power. The top speed is well over 50.. I haven't gone faster than that due to the conditions..ie: wavy, lots of boats.. But if you are going to be towing skiiers and tubes, get the V6, you won't be sorry.
The handling is superior and sharp turns. You never feel out of control or the boat is tippy. The boat is also very quiet. I had a 1993 Bayliner 1850 Capri with the V6 and this is 10 times the boat that was.
