2007 Bilge Pump switch

We own a 2007 Hurricane 231 center console. We replaced the bilge pump with no problem, we can turn on the pump manually, but the automatic switch wasn't working. I purchased a simple 12v float switch. The original wiring had the brown wire (power) split with (1) going to the pump and (1) going to the switch. There was a black wire going to the pump. there was a brown wire with a white stripe going to the switch. We wired it up and manually triggering the switch....nothing, but the bilge switch on the console still worked....help. When the battery was switched off and it rained or filled up with water it turned on automatically and did what it's supposed to. any thoughts?
