hey guys and girls.
i am looking at buying a boat, not just any boat, one that has been soaking wet, well sunk at some stage not to long ago.

i think i can get it for stuff all, around $500. is it worth doing up / restoring this boat???

have a look at some pictures i have, they are not great but let me know what you guys think. i need to make up my mind and cant.

i am happy to do the work, i love it but dont wanna spend HEAPS of $$$$$$ to get it done.

these boats in Australia of this age sell for any where between 20 and 30K

cheers

That really is not that bad. The 2007 Bayliner construction is very good. The motor is totally rebuild-able and tons of parts available and the lower unit is missing.

If that was an auction local to me I would look into it. Everything for that boat is available and the MOST costly single item will be the windshield which would cost about $1700 US if you can find one.

I actually see about $3500-5000 US to restore that boat.

Outrdrive $1300
Motor $ 1000 for parts
Seats $1000
and the windshield (original or get one adapted)

Just for your information the 2007 Bayliner had a lifetime hull warranty

Cheers for all your help BOB_VT

i think i will be looking into it some more and hopefully driving away with a new (well new to me) boat.

ill keep this thread updated on what goes on, and probably ask 1000 more questions as this will be my first big rebuild.

Looks like a 4 cylinder mercruiser 135hp to me. Nice boat. Worth restoring IMO.

Any of the electronics and all wiring will need 100% replacement or you will be chasing salt and corrosion and failed systems for the rest of the boats life. That alone would cause me to at least pause and add a couple more g's to the cost to restore. I still think it's a good project, just need to add that cost to the equation.

Looks like even the dash is all cracked up. Wonder what else is damaged besides the obvious. Wonder what the back story is and how long it was under.

I wonder why that boat sank, those boats aren't supposed to sink unless the maritime laws in Oz are different than here.

I may be naive, but I thought level floatation was an industry standard world wide.

Hey all, are you planning to do a transom and floor then as well right? Seems to me it would be required. maybe I missed that post? not sure a lifetime warranty will cover a sunk hulls damage.

Re: 2007 Bayliner 185 soaking wet

hey guys, thanks for the comments, yeah getting a back story has been very difficult, the company selling it "can not give out the details of the insurance company" so getting to the bottom of the questions such as why, or where, or how it sunk is difficult. i am going out to see the boat in person next Monday so will try and take some more pictures of the motor / damage, and nut out why it downed? i am interested to get opinion on transom / stringer replacement? is this something that will 100% need doing? or will it depend on how long it was WET for?
interesting to here the lifetime warranty stuff..... i do not think this would be covered as it has already had the insurance paid out and the auction company are now selling it on behalf of the insurance company.

Stringers and transom might be ok if it's a composite built boat, no rot.

Floatation foam below deck is probably going to be another story if that thing sunk... or maybe it doesn't even have any? Either way I'd be checking it out first thing if I bought it.

Re: 2007 Bayliner 185 soaking wet

jigngrub- i agree, i wonder if it has any floatation foam under the floor? if it does, how did it sink, if it does not? why not?
i might try and get onto Bayliner and see if they have any ideas? or they might just tell me they don't want to know about it haha.
these are made in the US are they not? i wonder if they are all made the same or if they are different (cheaper)_ when they are made for export?

Bayline has excellent customer support. If you can get the Hull Identification Number (molded into the transom in the upper driver's side corner and email that info to Bayliner Bayliner Customer Care

Re: 2007 Bayliner 185 soaking wet

Alright guys, i have gone and taken a few pictures of the boat and had some pleasant and some not so pleasant surprises.
good things, the throttle controls are all there and still move believe it or not, the leg is inside the boat and seems as though it is in ok condition.
bad things, there seems to be a crack on either side of the hull, only on the inside just under the bowrider seats. they run vertically up the side of the boat but are defiantly not on the outside, i am not really sure how this works, there seems as though there is a false floor in this part of the boat. also the engine (not that i am very experienced) seems it has most of the parts with it but the top of the block seems rusty, hopefully only superficial. oh also strangely the cap at the very front is not damaged but seems as though it as pulled away, when i lift it i can move it a fair bit, say an inch or more. like the screws have pulled out. not damage though.
i have added some pics, please give some advise and if you can work out how this thing sunkIMG_0009.jpgIMG_0011.jpg

Re: 2007 Bayliner 185 soaking wet

The separation of the cap from the hull is repairable as well as the cracks.

Having the outdrive leg is a good thing :)

The motor is missing many parts and is probably toast. You could probably get the block bored out and salvage the block but I would just keep it as a spare. You need to be on the hunt for a complete 3 Liter motor...... from a donor boat.

Take that HIN and email bayliner about it. Ask about the cracks in the hull and what could have caused it.
