My 2007 Mercury 90hp EFI engine has suddenly stopped running correctly, despite working great all weekend. Changed the oil 1 week prior, and had just refilled the gas tank after running all day. I still have 2 years on the warranty but wanted to troubleshoot this myself if possible.
* Starts and idles just fine.
* Runs well until 2400-2600 RPM, then sounds like it is misfiring and the alarm sounds.
- at 2400-2600 it misfires and starts running rough
- When running rough or misfiring, the alarm sounds almost constantly.
- it WILL NOT get past the misfiring/2600rpm limit - it just keeps misfiring and sounding the alarm without shutting down or "burning it out"
I have been through several tanks of gas since winter with no problems.
Just changed the oil one week before - may have put in a 1/2 qt too much, (discovered this after the engine stopped working correctly and drained some of it - but the exhaust NEVER smoked. Did not change the filters (gas or oil) during oil change. I have not pulled the plugs for inspection.
I refilled the gas about 1/2 hour before it stopped working. Could it be something in the gas - wouldn't that be stopped by the fuel filter before it got to the injectors or the plugs? I'm going to run some Quickleen through it, but I realize it may be too little too late.
Any suggestions?
