i have a 225 optimax with 160grs on it. i starting losing power about a week ago, Engine just suddenly dropped from 18knots to 12. Experienced major issues getting out of the hole. occasionally i was able to get up to what i think is full power with wot but it lasted seconds.
Marina did computer testing on the engine and it was determined that my 2 nd and third cylinders werent firing. When they pulled the plugs the second cylinder looked brand spanking new and the third looked slightly used but nothing like the plug from one of the remaining 4.
the engine rated for 5400 rpm at wot. i have never gotten more than 4800. i realize it could be the prop- BUT until the marina replaces the 2 coil units, i wont be able to tell.,
Marina called merc parts and was told they are out of stock until mid september.
We' re talking about the manufacturer! How can merc not have one single unit.
I started calling around the local area and after 20ish phone calls i located 2 at 2 different dealers. i also found out that 6 other boats were waiting on the same exact part
CLASS 339- pt# 883778A01
luckily i am still under warranty but i cant help thinking that if Mercury themselves doesnt have any-
1- how are they building any optimax engines? since its the same pt# for 08
2- considering all the 2007 225/250s they sold in 07 how can they not have inventory unless they sold everything they have
3- if they sold everything wouldnt this be a hint that there is a defect in the product?

Re: 2007/08 Optimax Potential Ignition Coil Defect

spoke to mercury warranty folks the other day. there are parts in stock however they cannot guarantee that they work properly.
They are aware of the situation and the rep acknowledged that they are having issues with the coils. There is no fix yet so they are sending out the coils as needed and arent replacing them as sets since the parts in stock may be suspect
Definitely smells like a recall or advisory is in the works.

Keep us posted.. I have a 200hp in the same year range. Runs fine except for the occasional "low pressure alarm" that appears to go off for no reason. Supposedly had something clogging the little gray line that goes to the water pressure sensor.

got the boat repaired under warranty and i can honestly say i doubt one of the coils worked for over 1yr.
the boats tops out at 5750rpm at which point the guardian kicks in., i can plane out in app 10secs or less at have reached up to 29.5kts.
runs like a charm again.
