I have a 2006 penta outboard. I have some paint bubbling up on the outdrive. I am not too concerned but I would like to know if anyone has repainted their outdrive? What process did you use and any specific materials do you like over others. Thanks for the help. By the way first post and l am looking forward to helping out after asking a bunch of newby questions first.

Thanks

Is it an i/o? Do you keep it in salt or fresh water? Do you have the right anodes for the type of water?. Now for the fun part. If you are going to sand down the drive #1. Wipe drive down with Acetone. This will remove any wax.#2.Use aluminum oxide wet/dry sandpaper. Do not use a wire brush. Metal particles can get lodged in the aluminum Wipe drive down again with acetone..#3 Use Zinc Chromate primer. You can buy it at West marine or online. Then paint it with your favorite Volvo color.

One of two things is happening. You don't have the right protection or you have too much. Paint bubbling with no corrosion means you are over protected. Paint coming off with corrosion means no protection or the wrong kind.

This will make for some good understanding of what is happening to your drive.

If your in saltwater you will need Zinc anodes. Put a set on the trim tabs also. In salt you will need to pay more attention to the drives and risers. Once you understand how and what causes it, taking care of it will be no problem. You will know what to be looking for.
