OK. I purchased this motor 3 weeks ago and finally got a chance to install on my 16" 1984 Grumman 5.0 center console.

After install I Barrel started it and let it idle......no problems.

1st time on water everything OK up to the point where I tried to go fast. The motor is not getting up to speed. 8 MPH per GPS.
I do not have an rpm gauge so I have no clue what the rpms are. In neutral the motor seems to get to high rpms.
Not sure if its in SLOW......no alarm and revs high in neutral. Telltale stream does look a little weak.

I checked compression 125 psi on both cylinders.
Good spark at idle speed.
Pulled the Carb and dissembled cleaned and blew all passages with air. I especially cleaned high speed jet.
This made no difference.
Checks for a spun prop and found nothing.
Changed plugs for good measure.
Checked fuel pump and for leaks in fuel lines
New gas with added sea foam to it.
Fuel filter is new.

Any suggestions? Thank you in advance

Could be running on one cyl. Do a cyl drop test on it and see what you find.

Try constantly squeezing the primer bulb at high speed and see if it makes a difference, maybe the fuel pump is giving you problems.
Try engaging the choke at high speed and see if it picks up.

I tried squeezing the primer bulb but unfortunately it made no change. I did notice that fuel is coming out of the Carb intake. Should i spray some premix into the Carb?

I did pull the spark wire while running at idle speed. I found that there was a slight change in the engine sound on both cylinders.
Do I need to pull them when trying to go at wot.

Thanks Jeff

I also ohm'd out both coils and they are within spec.

Fuel coming out of the carb intake, when you cleaned your carb did you get the float level set properly?

Try pulling them at wot and see what happens.

I left the float level the same....which was a 1/4 inch off the body and level. Service manual said I needed that omc float gauge to properly set. I I left it the way it was.

My background is in HVAC, so getting zapped has happened to me at fairly high amps. I got zapped by yesterday as I pulled the wire and it didn't seem to hurt too much........should it be stronger.

Did you try pulling the plug wires at WOT, as boobie suggested?

I,m gonna try to get out tomorrow evening to do a drop test @wot.

Just a little more info. Motor runs smooth with no bogging or sputtering.

OK took it out tonight....pulled plug wire and found significant difference on both cylinders. Also held in choke @wot and motor bogged a bit.
What would be the next troubleshooting task......?
When I got back I pulled the prop and found some wear on the outer edge of prop where it slides into the lower unit housing......what's that mean sigh.

I don't know if it makes a difference but I have a kicker motor next to this motor.

I'm lost and would appreciate any help or suggestions.

Any way you could borrow or rent a portable tach, knowing the RPM at WOT might help.

Yeah I think I'm gonna go ahead and order one.....I figured this would be tough without the tach.

Ok ...I'm going to install a tach today so I can give you guys some better info. I was wondering if this could be a timing issue? I'm planning on trying the Joe reeves timing method to see if my timing is set correctly, because it seems as though my spark is not advancing.....I'm guessing of course.

When perfroming the Reeves WOT test hoe many rpms should my tach be reading, also does this motor have quick start? If so, how do I
disable it?

Ran the motor today with the tach. I'm only getting to 4200 rpms. What's this mean?
ETA 9mph per GPS.

If the engine is running properly, compression, spark and fuel operating properly, it looks like either the engine isn't trimed properly or you have to big of a prop, not allowing the engine to turn proper RPM.

Thanks daviet ......prop is 10x13 and is spec for this motor. Trim could be could be off alittle ....its manual. Even at 4200rpms shouldn't I be going a bit faster or am I off base.
