I have a new to me 1995 Parker 1700 with an Evinrude E115FSL on it. I got it from the government (ex EPA boat), so it only has 409 hrs on it. It took about 2 yrs to get the paperwork cleared up on it, so during that time I'd test ran it with a hose hooked up to the drain port, per the owners manual; although I've since read that using muffs is much better for the engine. The 1st time I took it out it overheated. I had a local mechanic, who I don't have much faith in, replace the water pump. I don't remember if it was peeing or not before (1st time boat owner, didn't know to look), but it does now. Next time out, it overheated again within about 7 minutes. I ran it on land with muffs yesterday hooked to a diagnostic computer (surprisingly, I got a $40 diagnostic cable/software kit off of Amazon that with a bit of fussing, I got to work). It took 9 minutes at idle to reach 252 on the port gauge and the starboard was 32 degrees. So the starboard sensor has an open wire I need to find. From other research, the most likely culprits are the thermostats or poppet valve. I'm about to order some thermostats, but I can't find the poppet valve in the online catalogs. I tried searching for pressure relief valve, water control valve, actually anything with the word valve in it and couldn't find anything. I'm fairly mechanical, but new to working on outboards. Any idea what else the poppet valve could be called, or other ideas to be looking for?

OK, it looks like a 90* 2 stroke motor. On those the spring that holds the thermostats acts like a poppit valve. When the water pressure rises, it pushes the thermostats off their seats allowing water to bypass them.

Replace the thermostats (avail on Amazon) and see if the springs look good. BTW water pressure should be mid 20s PSI when cruising.

Thanks for the tip on the springs. It looks like they're only $6, I'll go ahead and replace them.

Full model # E115FSLSDS. I used the Evinrude Diagnostics software. Fault code 22.

Thanks for the video. While my info may be bad, I believe its last duty station was on the Ohio River; so unlikely it’s salt buildup. That said, it’s a salt water engine and who knows if it spent most of its life in salt. The boat isn’t at my home, but where I have some remote property. I happened to have an erand to run there today, so I tried to pull the thermostats and both covers disintegrated; so they haven’t been pulled in a while. Of course I ordered the new thermostats, springs, and seals without the covers this morning.

Sometimes the thermostat seals are installed under the cylinder heads. The heads would need to be removed to replace them. The 'stats, springs and orings are obviously on the outside of the cylinder heads.

cyl head gaskets are not to pricy..usually it may be good exercise to open then up (don't break any bolts !!!!) and inspect the cyl water jackets and cooling paths in the cyl heads.
