2005 115 Johnson PLSOR: how hot is too hot, and how much clunk is too much?

More (small) troubles with rebuild project. The shifter cable was pretty frayed (jacket was literally coming apart); had trouble finding neutral. Replaced, shifts nicely now, but the CLUNK! when clutch engages seems louder than it was. RPMs are around 600-700 (same as before). I realize after reading this forum (among other things) that some clunk is expected, but I wonder if there is too much of it, and if I should be looking for something... or if I am imagining things.

The other thing I discovered while running the motor topless is that the heads get hot really quick (2-3 minutes on muffs; uncomfortable to the touch). Motor pees as it should; no overheating alarm; no other overheating signs. Normal? Or what do I check for?

Thank y'all!

140-150 sounds pretty good ... experts here will confirm
how old is the impeller ??

here is a typical post-ficht ETEC guide....for a115 ho (v4-v6 engines)
IDLE temps with 70° water:

Typical temperature at IDLE speed should be 160°F ± 20°F (71°C ± 11°C).

Typical temperature displays at WOT speed

should be 120°F ± 20°F (50°C ± 11°C).

About 3 weeks old. :) Probably should get the thermometer, run and monitor it for a while and see where it levels off.

Looks like I am in range or close, though. I assumed it would be hotter at WOT than at idle, but, duh, it's pumping a lot more water through at WOT. Should have thought of it myself.

Thanks!
