while tail gunner brings up a good point with vinegar and oxalic acid. i wouldnt even worry about that little bit of staining. not worth the effort to pull the cam to soak the cam in oxalic acid.

stock compression on a 305 should be about 9.2:1 that is with stock GM flat-tops and stock GM small combustion heads with the 58cc combustion chambers.

So pulled cam. There is slight pitting. I think I'm gonna get a new cam and lifters.

So a search of 7395 cam pulls up one from summit.

that's a lot of pitting, did the engine sit with water in the oil at some point?
I had 2 blown head gaskets, water in the oil (salt water) and was able to get the water out of it within a week changing oil 3-4 times. When I did the top end overhaul, I pulled out all the roller lifters to inspect the cam and the cam looked like new, no pitting/discoloration or anything. So I'm wondering why it pitted that much.

I've been wondering the same question myself. Sitting for 6 months, condensation, I'm not sure. The valley above the cam looks clean. Head gaskets looked fine but I didn't thoroughly inspect, just a glance at them.
At this point I'm pretty much just reusing the heads, intake, carb, accessories. The main guts will be new. So I'm not gonna dig too deep on how it happened.

You need to measure. Talk to your machinist. At least, swap to the beehive springs. Stock heads good for total lift of .420 to .450. Simple mod to valve stem seal at machine shop and you can run in the .550 range plus

i was researching some clearance issue for my 65 gto, came across this seller had retainers and lock options that provided more clearance for me.

agreed that the area of the block just inside the fire ring has rust. however not sure why.

remember, the SBC bolts used since the late 80's are a one-time-use torque-to-yield bolt. you will need to get new head bolts ($35 for GM, about $130 for ARP)

Thank you. Gonna order new head bolts too. Wasn't aware of that.

also pick up an appropriate sized thread chaser (take the old bolt to the store to match it up) to clean out the holes in the block, the get gunked up due to raw water cooling and then the head bolts might not thread all the way in affecting torque readings. You might even want to thread the bolts in by hand to make sure they will thread all the way in first before installing the new head gaskets and cyl heads.

Got new block coming but I have a tap and die set I was planning on using. Carefully

Haven't forgotten. Just waiting on block to come in. I'll update when I get to that point.
